DUTIES

RESPONSIBILITIES

Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach one sections of EDUC5500 - Introduction to Counselling Skills from June 29-Aug 14, 2026 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm

Calendar Description: Students are provided an opportunity to explore the helping professions and the skills needed to communicate effectively with diverse populations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles and elements of the counselling interview.
  • Demonstrate purposeful and effective counselling skills in a counselling interview.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish an effective helping relationship, including attending to cognition, affect and meaning.
  • Outline the role of psychological theory in application to the helping process.
  • Describe ethical issues for helpers and ways of committing to ethical professional practice.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD, EdD required, ABD will be considered
  • A minimum of one (1) degree in education is required.
  • A Bachelor of Education or equivalent degree is strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in K-12 education is required.
  • Three (3) years of full time or equivalent hours teaching in K-12 school settings is required.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills required.
  • A successful and on-going record of research and/or the scholarship of teaching related to the subject matter is required.
  • Demonstration of subject matter expertise is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required.
  • Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
Pay Band
$2,575.50 - $2,575.50 ( Sessional Faculty - Academic (per credit) )
