Position Summary

The Senior Machinist can perform all tasks involved in the production of the company’s machined sub-assemblies and/or machined final products. This includes the programming and operation of CNC machines with a specialty in Haas mills used in the manufacturing of parts out of various grades of metal and plastic. The position follows standard work methods and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible.

Essential Functions

1. Set up and operate computer-controlled machines to perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic workpieces.

2. Review program specifications or blueprints to determine and set machine operations and sequencing, finished workpiece dimensions, or numerical control sequences.

3. Implement changes to machine programs and enter new specifications, using computers.

4. Transfer commands from computer to CNC machine modules using a computer network, jump drives, or via other media.

5. Modify cutting programs to account for problems encountered during operation and then save modified programs.

6. Monitor machine operations and control panel displays and compare readings to specifications to detect malfunctions.

7. Adjust machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machines malfunction.

8. Check to ensure that workpieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.

9. Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

10. Maintain machines and remove and replace broken or worn machine tools, using hand tools.

11. Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems.

12. Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures.

13. Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences.

14. Set up future jobs while machines are operating current jobs.

15. Clean machines, tooling, or parts, using solvents or solutions and rags.

Required Knowledge, Tools and Technology:

Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and knowledge of design, use, repair, and maintenance of related tooling, hand tools, and gauges:

Milling machines

· Computerized numerical control (CNC) milling machines

Gauges or inspection fixtures

· Bore gauges

· Dial indicators

· Pin gauges

· Calipers

Design – General knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in developing machined parts.

Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications and CNC machine programming.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, various temperatures, and moving mechanical equipment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk or hear. The position may require the use of standard PPE such as safety glasses, steel-toed boots and ear plugs. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications and Experience

· High school diploma or GED preferred

· Post-Secondary Certificates, awarded for technical CNC training completed after high school

· Previous production machining experience:

· Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job

· Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems

· Operation Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials and screens to ensure a machine is working properly

· Quality Control Analysis - Conducting tests and inspections of products to evaluate quality and/or machine performance.

· Programming – Writing or modifying computer programs to create or optimize CNC machine programs in both Mazatrol and G-code

· Must be able to routinely lift 25 pounds

· Must be able to work in a dynamic environment

· Occasional overtime to meet business needs

· Must be conversant in English for safe and effective performance of the job

· Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
