GEOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS ANALYST I
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
To learn to perform a variety of professional level work in support of the Agency’s Geographic Information System (GIS) related to planning, customizing, organizing and maintaining GIS databases and associated software and hardware; to generate and analyze spatial data; to create maps, reports and graphical presentations; to provide support to end users; and to perform technical tasks related to the Agency’s GIS activities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Geographic Information System Analyst series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience. The Geographic Information System Analyst I is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned at the II level.

Receives general supervision from a higher level supervisor or manager.

This is the journey level class in the Geographic Information System Analyst series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

- Learn to conduct complex spatial/surface analysis using a variety of GIS software tools.
- Learn to utilize multiple databases and GIS software to perform spatial analyses, ensure data integrity and prepare associated reports and maps.
- Create and edit maps, integrating a range of data formats.
- Participate in the analysis of GIS needs in support of Agency activities and assist in the implementation of GIS projects and applications to meet those needs.
- Modify geodatabases, including database rules, structures, tables and attributes.
- Create and edit geospatial data in GIS layers using digital techniques.
- Assist in performing GIS database management and administration tasks, monitoring and tuning database applications and verifying data integrity.
- Assist in the monitoring of GIS database performance in accordance with established standards, and detect, troubleshoot and resolve database performance problems.
- Participate in the implementation and management of databases accessed between GIS and the Agency’s ERP (enterprise resource planning) system.
- Create special reports and file extracts from existing databases.
- Participate in meetings with users to define data needs, project requirements, project output and/or develop GIS software programming applications.
- Assist in the coordination and integration of GIS functions and uses with other departments, other agencies/jurisdictions, engineers, developers and the public.
- Keep current on the latest computer hardware and software available to meet Agency GIS needs.
- Provide technical support to end users.
- Participate in the conduct of projects, identifying user needs and technology solutions to meet those needs, and the implementation of solutions.
- Work with ISSD to ensure GIS server infrastructure is running optimally.
- Prepare technical and administrative reports and train users in operational procedures.
- Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Research and recommend the purchase of equipment to meet the needs of the Agency.
- Assist in the planning and scheduling of new project installations related to repairs, maintenance, upgrades and modifications.
- Maintain records of tasks performed and completed.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other Agency employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Principles of cartography and orthographic projections.
- Principles and applications of GIS software and GPS (global position system), including ESRI-based GIS software and its applications and related programming languages, such as JavaScript, Python, and Arcade.
- Principles and practices of computer operating systems and related integration with GIS and GPS activities.
- Enterprise SDE geodatabase management uses and application.
- Relational database management systems and principles.
- Methods of advanced research, analysis and management related to GIS system applications and databases.
- Records storage and handling techniques.
- Computer operating methods, languages and procedures.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
- Perform professional level work in support of the Agency’s GIS data, databases and applications.
- Create attractive maps illustrating complex principles.
- Research sources of geographic data; collect, interpret and integrate data from various sources and databases to prepare maps, reports and related documents.
- Use GIS software to analyze spatial and tabular data to produce information maps and exhibits.
- Develop scripts and queries using Python and/or SQL for maintenance of GIS, PostgreSQL and/or other related databases.
- Design and execute analytical tabular and spatial queries and analyses.
- Analyze, interpret and apply technical and numerical data and information.
- Present, display and explain detailed information and data to a variety of end-users and audiences.
- Design, develop, modify and maintain GIS databases and applications.
