Job Summary:
Responsible for verifying patient/demographic information, billing and account follow up in a timely manner. Responsible for self-pay balances including installment accounts, receives payments, processes collection accounts, mail returns, tax adjustments and Financial Assistance applications. Post cash payments and adjustments to all accounts in a timely manner and posts miscellaneous payments to appropriate General Ledger Account. Maintains working knowledge of all insurance contracts and verifies appropriate payments according to contracts. Process refunds to insurance and or patients as appropriate.
Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Review and updates all patient and financial information accurately as given.
- Contacts self-pay in-house patients for financial arrangements and contacts guarantor regarding past due accounts Works with collection agencies on accounts referred.
- Interviews in house patients regarding payment plans and appropriate applications for payment assistance.
- Works with complex insurance issues and payer payment resolution. Processes adjustment requests. Follows up with insurance companies on past due accounts.
- Discuss insurance/payment questions with walk-in and phone customers. Assists patients with completion of all applicable forms as needed.
- Explains hospital regulations with regard to methods of payment on accounts and maintains complete working knowledge of insurance regulations and hospital insurance contracts.
- Posts payments and adjustments according to information received. Posts miscellaneous payments to the appropriate GL as needed. Timely follow up on payments posted to other accounts pending research. Bills all hospital services to primary and secondary insurance in a timely manner.
- Works with management on reports that are needed for regulatory requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of customer service and clerical experience.
- Business office experience in a hospital or clinic preferred.
Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:
- Patient registration and/or health care experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate clearly in person and on the phone and to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, physicians, staff and other customers.
- Intermediate-level computer skills to include keyboarding and knowledge of current computer applications.
- Adaptability: ability to learn, understand, and navigate work processes, terminology, and computer software systems.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret information from a variety of sources and to understand and follow moderately complex instructions.
- Ability to perform basic math functions.
- Customer service, teamwork and collaboration skills; ability to work effectively with patients and co-workers in a team environment.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work tasks effectively.
- Able to solve practical problems, interpret and understand moderately complex multiple step instructions provided verbally or in writing, and express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
