Summary of Job Function

  • Assumes responsibility for receiving and determining acceptability of all specimens received in the Department of Pathology, preparing specimens according to designated protocol for each laboratory procedure and engages in computer activity for the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System,
  • Obtains blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients/outpatients/outreach by venipuncture from the arm and/or micro collections from fingers or infant s heel in a variety of collection tubes or capillaries, some of which contain preservatives or anticoagulants,
  • Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to section productivity and cost effectiveness,
  • Assumes responsibility for recognizing situations that require referral to Technical Supervisor, Manager, Laboratory Director or Chief of Section of Chairman of Department,
  • Senior phlebotomists are flexible, working at various pre-analytical locations including inpatient, outpatient stations and send out while maintaining an extensive level of attention to detail during patient interactions,
  • Phlebotomists working in outreach are assigned to various nursing home locations,
  • Understanding proper patient identification methods using two identifiers,
  • Knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and the use of relevant medical equipment,
  • Experience using effective venipuncture techniques,
  • Knowledge of testing protocols, and the use of testing equipment,
  • Superb dexterity and hand-eye coordination are important,
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
  • Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee,

Job Qualifications/Education/Training/Certification/Licensure

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent,
  • 3 to 5 years phlebotomy experience
  • Basic Life Support certification,
  • Valid driver license, and insurance for outreach Senior phlebotomists,

Preferred:

  • Completion of a recognized phlebotomy course in Phlebotomy and or Medical Assistant or equivalent
  • Certification with an accredited Agency such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, Inc,
  • , and/or the National Phlebotomy Association
  • Successful completion of all Orientation Programs,

Work Environment and Hazards

  • Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areas,
  • All aspects of work involve strict compliance with policies and procedures,
  • Frequent exposure to situations involving incorrigible patients, families, physicians, and other hospital personnel, thus experiencing stressful pressure episodes,
  • Continuous exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious patients, chemical agents, hazardous waste, risk of needle injury or harm from needle sticks, and unpleasant environment,
  • Special Physical Demands: Must meet the requirements of the ADA
  • Prolonged standing; moderate walking,
  • Occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects weighing up to 20 pounds,
  • Work Contact Group- Significant contacts with patients, physicians, nursing departments; frequent contact with patients families, and other hospital personnel,

  • Adheres to infection control practices and procedures,
  • Adheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality,
  • Answers telephone in a timely manner giving factual information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines,
  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner,
  • Participates in on-going education (in service, continuing education, etc,)
  • Follows prescribed methods for needle/syringe control, adhering to safety/infection control procedures; reports unsafe conditions,
  • Maintains positive identification through specimen collection and processing,
  • Recognizes situations that need to be brought to the attention of Technical Specialist, Chief of Section, Scientific and Administrative Coordinator and/or Pathologist,
  • Reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures,
  • Washes hands before and after each patient,
  • Adheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality,
  • Applies specimen labels at patient bedside/chairside to blood or non-blood samples, with patient s full name, identification (hospital) number, date and time of collection and all information pertaining to the specimen collection and transports the specimens back to the department,
  • Centrifuges/siphons off supernatant and splits specimens for multiple section and test analysis, setting up work sheets for some large volume analyzers; collects blood/non-blood specimens from nursing units and transports Pathology Department,
  • Logs in blood/non-blood specimens into Pathology Dept,
  • via Hospital Information System and/or Laboratory Information System, indicating accessioning time, type of specimen, patient id, quantity of sample; separates specimen labels for multiple section test analysis,
  • Obtains blood and/or non-blood computer labels from Pathology Dept,
  • Greets patients/families (gives name, position, department); explains procedures, verifies patient s name, hospital number, location from wristband against collection label before beginning procedure,
  • Prepares all materials for specimen collection/labeling, prior to approaching patient s bedside, adhering to safety/infection control policies and procedures,
  • Prepares venipuncture site or skin puncture site; performs venipuncture or micro collection according to departmental and institution procedure and policies, obtaining clotted and/or non-clotted specimens for laboratory procedures in proper tubes and quantities,
  • Maintains appropriate level of supplies by performing scheduled inventory and observing expiration dates; receives and stores supplies in designated areas and notifies Supervisor when supplies need to be reordered,
  • Stocks shelves with phlebotomy supplies, issues 24 hour urine containers with/without preservatives; maintains/cleans accessioning/procurement dispatch area/dispatch area/equipment (centrifuges, refrigerators),
  • Stocks/supplies phlebotomy carts with equipment necessary for obtaining blood from patients compiles with all expiration dates,
  • Assists with orientation and training of new employees or students,
  • Assists with supervisory and administrative functions of the pre-analytical Section by directing the activities and workflow of subordinates in the absence of pre-analytical Section Supervisor,
