About This Position
STAFF ACCOUNTANT
The Staff Accountant (Temporary, Full-Time) provides essential day-to-day accounting and financial support to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial records. Working under the direction of the Director of Accounting, this role focuses on transactional processing, account maintenance, and documentation to support audits, grant reporting, and overall financial operations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and experienced in GAAP accounting.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable (AP)
- Process vendor invoices, check requests, and employee reimbursements.
- Verify proper coding of expenses to departments, programs, or grants.
- Ensure all payments are properly authorized and documented.
Accounts Receivable (AR)
- Record and deposit incoming receipts, donations, and grant disbursements.
- Maintain detailed records of contributions and restricted funds.
- Assist with reconciling revenue activity and donor funding reports.
Journal Entries and Ledger Maintenance
- Prepare and enter journal entries under the direction of the Director of Accounting.
- Maintain supporting documentation for all entries and adjustments.
- Assist with accruals and monthly recurring transactions.
Month-End and Year-End Close Support
- Gather and organize financial documentation for monthly and annual closing.
- Prepare supporting schedules for balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Assist with variance analysis and other reports as requested.
Audit and Compliance Assistance
- Collect and organize supporting documents requested by external auditors.
- Maintain audit-ready files and assist the Director of Accounting with audit preparation.
- Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls.
Grant and Program Support
- Assist in tracking grant expenditures and matching costs to the appropriate fund.
- Prepare supporting documentation for grant reimbursement requests and reports.
Administrative and Operational Support
- Maintain organized accounting files, invoices, and receipts.
- Support the finance team in implementing process improvements.
- Communicate with staff regarding accounting forms, timelines, and policy compliance.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience in accounting or finance will also be considered.
Experience:
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit or fund accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with Accufund, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar accounting software is a plus.
Skills & Attributes:
- Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office applications.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Professional integrity, confidentiality, discretion, and collaborative spirit.
- This role is based in our Atlanta office and offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule within a supportive office environment.
- Standard BBBSMA office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm.
- This role is primarily sedentary and, in a hybrid environment, regularly involves the use of standard office technology such as computers, phones, and printer/copiers, as well as virtual collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams).
- May occasionally require bending, reaching, and lifting up to 10 lbs.
