About This Position

This position is responsible for participating in the repair and maintenance of city streets, storms drains, and related infrastructure.
  • Participates in the maintenance and repair of city streets; patches asphalt; repairs cuts and other damage.

  • Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair, of storm drains.

  • Pours and finishes concrete.

  • Installs traffic control devices at work sites.

  • Performs carpentry duties.

  • Trips and cuts trees and bushes.

  • Mows grass.

  • Assists in the collection of solid waste as needed.

  • Lays sod.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of street maintenance principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of storm drainage system maintenance principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of street maintenance equipment.

  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Street Maintenance Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related street maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.

  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the city’s street maintenance operations. Successful performance contributes to safe and well-maintained streets and infrastructure.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, and the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
