Performs a variety of duties involving the diagnoses, treatment, and management of individuals with hearing loss or balance problems.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Identifies, assesses, diagnoses, manages, and interprets test results related to disorders of human hearing, balance, and other neural systems for pediatrics through geriatrics.

2. Evaluate auditory function of patients utilizing diagnostic audiologic tests that include, but are not limited to, pure tone and speech testing, immittance testing, and otoacoustic emission testing.

3. Evaluate vestibular system with videonystamography (VNG) procedures.

4. Perform advanced electrophysiologic tests that include, but are not limited to, Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing, and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP) testing.

5. Interpret results and counsel patients regarding their test results to determine a course of treatment and review options that best meet their hearing care needs.

6. Provide hearing aid services including hearing aid evaluation, hearing aid dispensing, and hearing aid adjustments/follow up with appropriate counseling.

7. Assists patients with Cochlear Implant evaluation, device selection, programming and counseling.

8. Educate patients about hearing health, treatment options, and preventive measures.

9. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including otolaryngologists, to ensure comprehensive patient care.

10. Demonstrate strong organizational skills by managing patient appointments, follow-ups, and documentation efficiently.

11. Mentor and provide direction to Audiology doctoral students.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. Master's or Doctorate Degree in Audiology from an accredited institution of higher learning.

2. Massachusetts’ Audiologist license.

3. Attainment of the Certificate of Clinical Competence within six months of date of hire.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Audiology.

2. Demonstrated skill in analyzing problems and making decisions.

3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

4. Ability to work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team.

5. Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred:

1. Minimum of 1 year Audiology experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a patient care and normal office environment.

ADDENDUM FOR AUDIOLOGIST STUDENT/EXTERN LIAISON ROLE

Position Summary:

To facilitate student placements by coordinating with sending schools, provide information on our student placement program and services available to the students and prospective externs.

Major Responsibilities

Student Liaison

1. Coordinate communications between UMass Memorial Medical School and select universities on student placements. Communicate with university on availability of supervisors, what the clinics would look like and how many students are able to participate.

2. Work with Audiology staff regarding student scheduling and supervisory availability. Ensure that Audiologists have completed their supervisory requirements through ASHA.

3. Coordinate that students are properly onboarded.

4. Meet with student on first day of placement and orient them to the department (introductions, policies, badge, etc.).

5. Regularly meet with students and their supervisors to ensure placement for student and super-visor is going well, review any concerns, and communicate with the sending university if needed.

Extern

6. Work with department manager to determine when position is approved and can be posted, and if pay for the position has been approved. Responsible for the posting, job application and interview process.

7. Work with HR, Jane Bania, and the sending school to ensure all contracts are completed.

8. Ensure extern has been properly onboarded, including onboarding schedule, rotation schedule, training sessions, and orientation.

9. Responsible for obtaining supervisory evaluations of students.

10. Regularly meet with students and their supervisors to ensure placement for student and super-visor is going well, review any concerns, and communicate with the sending university if needed.

11. Complete licensure forms at end of externship.
