About the Software Engineer II position:

The Software Engineer II at Avalon plays a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining applications that are critical to the organization’s success. Working within a collaborative, agile environment, this position applies strong technical expertise and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, reliable, and scalable solutions.

As an intermediate-level engineer, the Software Engineer II takes on increased ownership of features and projects, contributing to architectural decisions and helping advance technical standards across the team. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional partners, active participation in code reviews, and mentorship of junior engineers to promote best practices and continuous improvement.

Balancing hands-on development with thoughtful system design, the Software Engineer II ensures solutions are maintainable, performant, and aligned with business objectives. This position provides an opportunity to deepen technical expertise, expand organizational impact, and grow toward technical leadership within a supportive and innovative environment.

This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon’s corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Software Engineer II – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to assess business requirements and contribute to the design and documentation of scalable technical solutions.Interpret and maintain technical diagrams and documentation, such as context diagrams, data flow diagrams, and process flows, with minimal guidance.Develop and execute unit, integration, and regression test plans to ensure high-quality, reliable software delivery.Troubleshoot and resolve application and integration issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term solutions.Design and develop modular, maintainable, and reusable code, applying best practices and contributing to the team’s coding standards.Actively participate in all phases of Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including sprint planning, development, testing, and deployment.Lead and participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and helping to elevate code quality across the team.Mentor junior engineers by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and modeling effective engineering practices.Demonstrate a growing understanding of how technical solutions align with business goals and contribute to operational success.Build and apply domain knowledge of health plan operations and related systems to inform technical decisions.Participate in the on-call rotation to support critical software systems, demonstrating ownership and accountability for production stability.Software Engineer II – Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline; or the equivalent years of relevant business and technical experience.2+ years of relevant work experience.Technical Skills

Proficient in one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable code.Solid understanding of relational databases and experience writing complex SQL queries (e.g., MSSQL, PostgreSQL).Strong experience using source control tools like Git, including branching strategies, pull requests, and resolving merge conflicts.Comfortable working in modern development environments such as IntelliJ, VSCode, or Eclipse, and configuring tools to support productivity.Practical experience with web services and integration techniques, including RESTful APIs, SOAP, and microservices architecture.Ability to navigate and perform advanced tasks in a Linux environment, including scripting and troubleshooting.Working knowledge of Agile methodologies and the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), with experience participating in sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog grooming.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI for automated builds, testing, and deployments.Exposure to containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes is a plus.Solid understanding of secure coding practices and performance optimization techniques.Ability to mentor junior developers on technical concepts, tools, and best practices.Soft Skills

Hands-on experience designing and consuming RESTful services and APIs, with an understanding of best practices for scalability and security.Practical experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, including familiarity with core services like S3, EC2, Lambda, or IAM.Proficiency with front-end technologies such as React, Next.js, CSS/SASS, Material UI, and/or Bootstrap, with the ability to contribute to user-facing features.Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with a focus on writing clean, maintainable, and testable code.Solid understanding of unit testing principles and experience using testing frameworks and tools (e.g., JUnit, Jest, Mocha).
