About the Software Engineer II position:

Avalon’s Software Engineer II plays a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining applications that are critical to the organization’s success. Working within a collaborative, agile environment, this position applies strong technical expertise and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, reliable, and scalable solutions. As an intermediate-level engineer, the Software Engineer II takes on increased ownership of features and projects, contributing to architectural decisions and helping advance technical standards across the team. Balancing hands-on development with thoughtful system design, Software Engineer II ensures solutions are maintainable, performant, and aligned with business objectives. This position provides an opportunity to deepen technical expertise, expand organizational impact, and grow toward technical leadership within a supportive and innovative environment.

This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon’s corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Software Engineer II – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development: Develop low-to-medium complexity design documents and contribute to application diagrams from defined requirements. Take on small to medium tasks and drive them to completion with minimal coaching, including small research tasks and basic design work.
  • Mentorship and Best Practices: Support the growth of QA team members and junior engineers, and participate in code reviews for peers, applying and adhering to established coding best practices and procedural standards. Support quality delivery by following the team's definition of done and flagging potential issues when identified.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Develop and execute unit test plans, including regression testing, and assist in developing functional test plans to verify system functionality according to requirements and guidelines.
  • Application Support: Perform application administration and support, triaging and resolving integration issues, documenting, and tracking product defects, and implementing solutions. Participate in on-call rotation schedule
  • Agile Process and Collaboration: Contribute to and follow Avalon’s Agile/SAFe process for developing, testing, maintaining, and deploying code. Collaborate with product owners, engineering leads, and architects, aligning IT solutions with business objectives. Adhere to the defined SDLC: Write code and tests that adhere to the company defined SDLC (software defined deliver lifecycle). Ensure all work complies with the team's definition of done.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Incorporate AI tools into daily development workflows across code generation, debugging, research, and writing tests and documentation. Must review and validate all AI-generated output before submission and transparently flag AI usage to senior engineers or leads for appropriate oversight and review.
  • Evaluate and adopt new technologies or tools that enhance system performance maintainability.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Work effectively within the immediate team and occasionally across other teams or enabler teams. Communicate clearly with the engineering manager, product owner, and scrum master. Explain medium-complexity problems and demonstrate completed work in sprint demos
  • Software Engineer II – Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related discipline; or equivalent relevant business and technical experience; Advanced degree desired.
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience in application software development, maintenance, implementation, and support.
  • Ability to interpret and implement low-level designs provided by architects or senior engineers and effectively communicate implementation details to the team.
  • Solid experience in backend development with Java 21+, Spring Boot 3+, Hibernate, and other Spring libraries
  • Working knowledge of AWS services (e.g., S3, EC2, ECS/Fargate, Lambda) and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Solid understanding of OOP concepts, design patterns, and MVC architecture.
  • Experience using source control tools like GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and resolving merge conflicts.
  • Experience with MS SQL Server and T-SQL.
  • Experience with NoSQL a plus.
  • Familiarity with middleware and integration concepts and techniques (SOAP, Web Services, XML, JSON, REST, SAML, APIs, Microservices).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver and support quality solutions on time.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment.
  • Experience with unit test frameworks such as JUnit.
  • Working knowledge of patterns such as Dependency Injection, the Builder Pattern, and OOP.
  • Software Engineer II – Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare knowledge or experience preferred.
  • BPMN understanding is a plus.
  • Planning, developing, and deploying high volume, mission-critical software applications in a healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge or experience with HIPAA regulations and standards for security (PHI, IIHI), privacy and transactions
  • Experience in Docker, and container-orchestration
  • Experience with Prometheus / Grafana / PagerDuty
  • Experience with OpenSearch
  • Familiarity with Drools
  • Experience with Apache Kafka, Confluent Platform, and Event-Driven architecture
  • Experience with AWS Fargate or Kubernetes
