Job Summary:

We are seeking a licensed Drinking Water System Operator (DWSO) to provide part-time, on-call support for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Northern Idaho Agency (NIA). The NIA operates a very small community water system serving fewer than 500 users. This role ensures safe, potable water distribution and compliance with all federal and state drinking water regulations. The position requires flexibility to perform routine monitoring and respond to emergencies as needed.

Essential Duties
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain the NIA Community Water System in accordance with EPA and Idaho drinking water standards.
  • Perform mandatory water testing, sampling, and reporting per federal and state guidelines.
  • Conduct system checks, troubleshoot equipment, and maintain operational records.
  • Prepare detailed site visit reports, including inspection summaries, non-compliance findings, recommendations, and photo documentation; submit reports within 48 hours of visit.
  • Coordinate with NIA staff and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and related requirements.
  • Respond to emergencies affecting the water system, including after-hours and weekend call-outs.
  • Provide support for system upgrades, maintenance, and repairs (materials reimbursed with receipts).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensure: Valid Idaho Drinking Water System Operator license (proof required annually).
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining community water systems, including sampling and compliance reporting.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with email, report writing, spreadsheets, and photo documentation; familiarity with SCADA systems and remote monitoring tools preferred.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of groundwater systems, distribution hydraulics, storage tanks, and pressure zones; regulatory compliance with EPA and Idaho DEQ standards.
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to support federal agency requirements.

Schedule: Approximately 8–12 hours per week for routine tasks, plus emergency availability as needed. Travel: Occasional site visits within Lapwai, Idaho.
