Job Description
Position Summary
The Controller oversees accounting operations for a promotional products manufacturer with manufacturing facilities in California and Mexico. The role is responsible for cost accounting, inventory management, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance with U.S. GAAP across both locations.
Reporting & Governance
The Controller reports directly to the Corporate Controller with a dotted-line relationship to the California General Manager. The Mexico Controller reports directly to the Controller with a dotted-line relationship to the Mexico General Manager. All accounting policy, reporting, compliance, and close activities are governed through the Controller and Corporate Controller.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
· Prepare and review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and consolidated financial statements
· Manage day-to-day accounting activities including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
· Establish, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
· Ensure accurate revenue recognition and expense accounting in accordance with U.S. GAAP
· Oversee cash management activities
· Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team
Manufacturing & Cost Accounting
· Analyze material, labor, overhead, and freight costs
· Monitor excess and obsolete inventory
Sales & Use Tax Compliance
· Oversee sales and use tax reporting and filings
· Ensure proper tax treatment of manufacturing and inventory transactions
· Coordinate with external tax advisors and audits
Systems & ERP
· Serve as primary accounting resource for Microsoft Dynamics AX
· Participate in future NetSuite ERP implementation
Support testing, data validation, and post-go-live stabilization
Experience
· 6+ years of progressive accounting experience
· Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager experience
· Manufacturing experience required (high transactional volume)
· Experience in cost accounting and inventory accounting
· Microsoft Dynamics AX or similar ERP system experience strongly preferred
· ERP implementation participation experience (NetSuite a plus)
· Multi-site and/or cross-border manufacturing experience preferred
· Public accounting experience a plus
Skills & Competencies
· Strong cost accounting and manufacturing finance expertise
· Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP
· Hands-on ERP and accounting systems experience
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
· Ability to partner effectively across multiple locations
· Advanced Excel skills and high attention to detail
