Position Summary:
Uses technical expertise and training to maintain the overall quality and timeliness of the services rendered. Assists in directing personnel and resources in the most efficient manner and assumes responsibility for ensuring ongoing quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing within departmental standards. Performs a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Exercises professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. The Technical Specialist assumes responsibility and accountability for the accuracy of procedures performed.
Department Summary:
The Laboratory provides clinical testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, immunohematology urinalysis, chemistry and toxicology. Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, various Aultman Orrville Hospital inpatient departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients. This highly automated clinical laboratory offers an extensive test menu and performs close to 350,000 tests a year.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree, including twelve-month training in an approved program for Medical Laboratory Science, with certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by an approved certifying agency or Bachelor of Science degree with MLT certification and/or necessary experience to be designated as a registry eligible MLS.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a clinical laboratory preferred.
- Minimum 2 years’ leadership experience preferred
- Willingness and ability to fill the CLIA role of Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor as defined by CAP for the following testing areas:
- Chemistry
- Coagulation
- Blood Bank
- Hematology
- Urinalysis
- Serology
- Toxicology

- Maintain competence in the following test areas and work in staffing when the need arises.

- Oversees all aspects of the Hematology, Urinalysis, and Coagulation, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Serology departments including but not limited to accreditation and quality.
- Works with peers and leadership to achieve hospital and departmental goals.
- Introduces and demonstrates new procedures, programs, and equipment to departmental and other hospital staff as appropriate.
- Works with Laboratory Coordinator to oversee the selection, training/orientation and evaluation performance of staff. Makes recommendations for personnel actions.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the quality and critical aspects of service programs/modalities provided by the department including quality control and takes appropriate action to report and address identified issues.
- Works with the Laboratory Coordinator to monitor and maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements, accreditation standards and hospital policies.
- Maintains department and equipment and seeks to develop new program enhancements and strategies.
- Performs blood collection by venipuncture and micro-collection techniques.
- Collaborates with Policy Tech specialist and Laboratory Coordinator to develop laboratory policies and procedures.
- Works closely with the Laboratory Coordinator to ensure the Laboratory’s operational excellence and ensures that quality services are delivered in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional behavior standards.
- Problem solve issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and patient care delivery.
- Actively participate in departmental and hospital committees and meetings as appropriate.
- Organizes and directs the daily activities of the laboratory and supervises the technical staff
- Responsible for coordinating all technical, logistical, and administrative functions to ensure prompt and accurate testing and reporting of results for all laboratory samples within established timeframes
- Works with Lab Coordinator to train new employees.
- Delegates or resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial action is taken and documented when tests do not perform to specifications and that patient results are only reported when tests are functioning properly
- Assigns and reviews the workflow of all technical staff
- Approves overtime, no-lunches, and requests to leave early if the Laboratory Coordinator is not present.
- Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.

Working Conditions:
- Work eight to twelve hours a day. This unit requires 24/7 coverage.
