About This Position
The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground fiber optic and conduit systems for telecommunications projects. This role requires a strong understanding of drilling operations, underground utility safety, and coordination with the drilling crew to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient installations.
Key Responsibilities
Operate horizontal directional drill rigs and support equipment safely and efficiently
Perform bore planning, setup, drilling, reaming, and pullback operations
Read and interpret utility locates, bore profiles, and construction plans
Maintain proper bore depth and alignment to avoid existing utilities
Coordinate with locator to ensure accurate tracking and adjustments during drilling
Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies
Assist with potholing, cleanup, and restoration as required
Complete required job documentation and production reports
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain
Qualifications & Requirements
2+ years of directional drilling experience (telecom or utility preferred)
Experience installing fiber optic conduit, duct banks, or telecom infrastructure
Strong understanding of underground utility locating and damage prevention
Ability to read prints and follow bore plans
Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred (or willingness to obtain)
Ability to lift 75–100 lbs and perform physical labor as needed
Comfortable working long hours, overtime, and traveling to job sites
Preferred Certifications
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
HDD Operator certification (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or equivalent)
First Aid / CPR
Confined Space or Trenching & Excavation (a plus)
Work Environment
Outdoor construction environment
Exposure to dirt, dust, noise, and weather extremes
