Work alongside staff and residents to create a safe, supportive environment and achieve meaningful goals.
Reporting to the Program Manager, the selected candidate will conduct regular wellness checks on shelter residents, assist with facility maintenance, and manage laundry tasks as needed. They will answer phones, providing information or assistance to callers, and respond promptly to emergency situations while following established protocols. The candidate will collaborate with staff and residents to implement strategies for achieving designated goals and provide temporary emergency care and support to residents in need.
The ideal candidate has previous experience in a similar role or a background in social services, as well as knowledge of homelessness issues and an understanding of trauma-informed care. Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental attitude are essential. Knowledge of community resources and support services. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team. Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively and basic computer skills for data entry and communication purposes.
This is funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Qualified candidates must be:
- Aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent Resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
This role requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Information Check (PIC), and a Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Justice.
