About This Position
The Systems Operations Center (SOC) Director leads the 24/7 operational nerve center of the airline, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable execution of the cargo network. This role oversees real-time flight operations, network performance, irregular operations (IROPs) management, and cross-departmental coordination. The SOC Director acts as the strategic and tactical leader responsible for maintaining operational integrity, optimizing aircraft utilization, and protecting service commitments to customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Direct daily operations of the Systems Operations Center, including flight dispatch, load control, crew scheduling, maintenance control, and network management.
- Maintain situational awareness of the global cargo network, proactively identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
- Lead IROP response efforts, ensuring rapid decision-making and effective communication across departments.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all SOC activities comply with FAA, ICAO, and company safety standards.
- Partner with Safety and Quality teams to monitor operational risk and implement corrective actions.
- Champion a safety-first culture within the SOC and across operational teams.
- Network Performance & Optimization
- Oversee real-time aircraft routing, payload management, and schedule integrity.
- Optimize aircraft utilization, turn times, and cargo throughput to maximize revenue and efficiency.
- Collaborate with Planning, Cargo Sales, and Ground Operations to align operational execution with commercial priorities.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Serve as the primary operational decision authority during disruptions, coordinating with Maintenance, Flight Operations, Cargo Operations, and Customer Service.
- Communicate operational impacts and recovery plans to executive leadership.
- Ensure seamless information flow between SOC teams and field stations worldwide.
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop SOC managers, controllers, and specialists.
- Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee staffing, training, and succession planning for all SOC functions.
Technology & Systems Management
- Oversee operational systems including flight planning, tracking, crew management, and cargo management platforms.
- Partner with IT to evaluate and implement new technologies that enhance operational visibility and decision-making.
- Ensure data accuracy and system reliability across all SOC tools.
Strategic Planning
- Contribute to long-term fleet, network, and operational strategy.
- Lead post-operation reviews and implement process improvements.
- Develop and manage SOC budget, including staffing, technology, and infrastructure.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred.
- 10 + years of airline operations experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Deep understanding of flight operations, dispatch, maintenance control, and cargo logistics.
- FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate preferred.
- Experiencer in cargo airline operations (express, ACMI, or scheduled)
- Proven leadership and management experience in operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Expertise in developing and implementing operational policies and procedures.
- Deep understanding of relevant industry regulations and standards (e.g., NERC, FAA).
- Proficiency with operational systems, software, and data analysis.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and presentation skills for executive leadership.
- Commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement in system operations.
- Available to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as operations require.
Physical Requirements
- Light work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Ability to stand, bend, and reach to maintain files, sit for extended periods of time.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
Travel
- This position may require travel, as needed, to support operational related activities.
