About This Position

Columbus Technical College is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a part-time Portable Fire Extinguisher Inspection and Maintenance Adjunct Instructor for our Economic Development division. This individual will facilitate training aligned with NFPA 10 guidelines, support workforce and safety training initiatives by providing foundational training that prepares participants to properly perform portable fire extinguisher inspections in accordance with applicable standards and organizational policies. This position is part-time/non-exempt.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare lesson plans and class schedule
  • Select and obtain appropriate educational materials, equipment and supplies
  • Monitor use of and maintain supplies, equipment and/or facilities for assigned program
  • Assist with recruiting and marketing activities
  • Assist with registration and orientation functions
  • Sustain partnership with companies
  • Conduct practical demonstrations and scenario-based exercises
  • Facilitate training on the following:
    • Types & Classifications of portable fire extinguishers
    • Proper placement, accessibility, and inspection criteria
    • Monthly visual inspection requirements
    • Annual inspection requirements under NFPA 10
    • Identification of damaged, expired, or non-serviceable extinguishers
    • Documentation and tagging requirements
    • Removal of extinguishers from services when non-compliant
    • Clearly distinguish inspector responsibilities from AHJ or organizational authority
    • Conduct practical demonstrations and scenario-based exercises
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience conducting or overseeing portable fire extinguishers inspections to include identifying non-compliant, damaged, expired, or non-serviceable extinguishers.
  • Must have earned an NFPA-based credential such as Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS)
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 10 - Standard for portable fire extinguishers, including monthly and annual inspection requirements
  • Strong communication, organizational, and facilitation skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience teaching, training, or facilitating safety-related or technical instruction
  • Fire Inspector I or II (IFSAC or Pro Board)
  • Prior experience as a Fire Inspector, Fire Protection Specialist, Fire Marshal, or Fire Protection Engineer
  • Experience in delivery of workforce or professional safety training
  • Additional NFPA certifications or equivalent professional credentials
Salary/Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with education and experience
