Full Time Aviation Instructor - 9 Month at Sandhills Community College – Pinehurst, North Carolina

The Aviation Instructor/Chief Instructor (AI/CI) reports to the Department Chair of Transportation and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Sandhills Community College FAA Ground Training courses. The AI/ CI is the principle point-of-contact to the FAA for the Sandhills Community College and works closely with the Aviation Program Department Chair on listed aspects of the program. The AI/CI ensures compliance with Title 14 CFR Part 141 regulations, other applicable regulations, and Sandhills Community College policies. The AI/CI instructs in Aviation program courses as assigned and serves as a program advisor to students.

Serves as a faculty advisor to Aviation students. The Chief Instructor will oversee the Ground Instructors for compliance of Title 14 CFR Part 141 regulations. The Chief Instructor will directly supervise the Instructors of FAA approved ground courses and those involved in simulator direct instruction, as deemed necessary. Day-to-day operations and responsibilities include: Maintain Certified Flight Instructor and Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument certification with FAA. Completing an annual Flight Instructor Refresher Course and complying with all requirements of 14 CFR 141.85 Serve as an instructor in FAA ground school and oversee and/or conduct simulator training. Management of ground and simulator training, to include syllabi changes, TCO development, flight instruction assignments, record-keeping policies and procedures, Maintenance of a of Training Agreements and primary liaison with Partner Flight Training Programs to manage student access and opportunity as well as monitor successful outcomes within those agreements. Monitor scheduling to ensure simulators are properly scheduled and manned. Provide student management processes that schedule pilots, ground school and simulators; assign grades as appropriate, and track quality of training provided. The Chief Instructor may delegate duties to suitably qualified staff instructors. If a change in duty is of a long-term nature, the Program Coordinator will be informed. Additional duties include: Raising student concerns and performance issues to the Aviation Program Coordinator for timely resolution, Daily oversight of the use and condition of the classrooms and simulator training spaces. In coordination with the Aviation Program Coordinator, prepare budget inputs and oversee execution of any flight designated funding, Ensure that all FAA ground training is properly documented per Part 141 and that certifications for FAA Knowledge Testing are rendered. In coordination with the Aviation Program Coordinator, solicit and interview potential flight instructor applicants, In conjunction with the Aviation Program Coordinator, develop revenue enhancing and cost-control options to better steward the Aviation Program, Assist in coordinating and scheduling any Continuing Education Classes that may be scheduled for Aviation, In conjunction with the Aviation Program Coordinator, ensure that all Aviation programs support Sandhills Community College, the Moore County Airport Board Authority, and associated flight training programs.

Required education and experience:

An associate degree in an Aviation related field from a regionally accredited institution is required; a bachelor’s degree in an Aviation related field from a regionally accredited institution is preferred. A minimum of one year of experience as a ground school instructor at a certified pilot school or military pilot flight training program Current Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFI-I) certification from FAA Sandhills Community College is a Part 141 Ground School for Private Pilot Certification, Instrument Rating, and Commercial Pilot Certification. The college curriculum includes simulator flight training to support students toward their Private, Instrument, and Commercial certifications and ratings. As such, according to Part 141.35, the qualifications for a Part 141 Chief Flight Instructor apply: (1) Airplane Single-Engine Land Commercial or ATP pilot certificate with instrument rating, (2) Meet the pilot-in-command recent flight experience of Part 61.57 (3) pass a knowledge test on- (i) Teaching Methods; (ii) Applicable provisions of the “AIM” (iii) Applicable provisions of parts 61, 91, and 141 of this chapter; and (iv) The objectives and approved course completions standards of the course for which the person seeks to obtain designation. (4) pass a proficiency test on instructional skills and ability to train students on the flight procedures and maneuvers appropriate to the course.

Preferred education and experience:
As Sandhills Community College continues to grow and create opportunities and career pathways for students, the potential for developing a Part 141 flight school exists which would require the Chief Instructor to have the following experience IAW 14 CFR 141.35:
(5) For a flight training course leading to a Private Pilot Certificate or rating, a chief instructor must have:

• (a) At lease 1,000 Hours as PIC; and
• (b) Primary flight training experience, acquired as either a CFI or instructor in a military flight training program, or a combination thereof, consisting of at least 2 years and a total of 500f flight hours; or 1,000 flight hours.

(6) For a flight training course leading to the issuance of an instrument rating or a rating with instrument privileges, a chief instructor must have:

• (a) At least 100 hours flight time under actual or simulate instrument conditions;
• (b) At least 1,000 hours PIC; and
• (c) Flight training experience, acquired as either a CFI-I or an instructor in a military pilot flight training program, or a combination thereof, consisting of 2 years and a total of 250 flight hours; or 400 flight hours.

(7) For a flight training course of training other than one leading to the issuance of a private pilot certificate or instrument rating or a rating with instrument privileges, a chief instructor must have:

• (a) at least 2,000 hours as PIC; and
• (b) Flight training experience as either a CFI or military pilot flight training program, or a combination of at lease 3 years and a total of 1,000 flight hours; or 1,500 flight hours.

Candidates who already posses these flight requirements would be preferred candidates.
