SCHEDULE - Full-time, On-site
Generally Monday-Friday, including holidays as needed. Some shifts may include weekends as needed. Schedule subject to change to meet the needs of shelter operations.

ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is Albuquerque’s largest shelter, serving an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people, offering a safe and welcoming environment to people experiencing homelessness. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm overnight bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. The team provides easy access to trauma-informed services such as case management, job searching, and other supportive services. The team's goal is to guide guests through a successful exit from the shelter to safe, stable housing and a plan for ongoing support.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT SHELTER MEDICAL DRIVER?

  • You are skilled in safe vehicle operation and adherence to traffic laws and safety protocols.
  • You understand and demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, including medically fragile clients.
  • You take pride in keeping accurate documentation of transportation activities, including trip logs and incident reports.
  • You are proactive, always prepared to address medical or vehicular emergencies with calm and efficient responses.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
As the Shelter Driver, you will ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for shelter residents, including medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, and transportation during suspension periods. You will also support the shelter’s operations by assisting with general tasks and stepping into other roles as needed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operate the shelter shuttle for medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, and suspension-related transport.
  • Follow established schedules and respond to ad hoc transport requests as directed by management.
  • Assist residents with boarding and ensure all safety measures, including seatbelt use, are followed.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and report maintenance issues promptly.
  • Prioritize the needs of medically fragile residents and follow established protocols for their transport.
  • Respond to emergencies during transport by contacting emergency services and shelter management as needed.
  • Ensure the safe handover of residents to medical personnel or return to the shelter.
  • Maintain detailed logs of trips, including dates, times, residents transported, and purpose of transport.
  • Document incidents and report them to the associate director or direct supervisor.
  • Provide assistance in other shelter functions as needed, including administrative tasks or resident supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Obtain City Operators Permit
  • High School Diploma or GED and two (2) progressive years of experience in general office procedures and customer service and driving
