About This Position

Position Definition: Manages the daily administration of the City’s computer servers and operating systems for proper functionality, maximum availability and in support of user requirements.

General Duties: Receives oral and written instructions from Supervisor. Manages the distributed, multi-platform system environment (local and remote file and print servers), including: hardware and operating system maintenance; user account management; system performance monitoring and tuning; backup and recovery; software upgrades and patches; security protocols and patches. Creates and executes systems management plans and methodologies. Develops scripts and other applications to facilitate systems management and workflow. Researches and develops new system architectures as appropriate for environment. Provides administration and support of Microsoft Outlook/Exchange servers and cloud services and end-user email devices, such as Smart Devices. Designs, implements, maintains, and enforces appropriate system and application server security and access levels in accordance with Department Polices and best practices to insure the validity and integrity of systems and data. Provides help desk support for server issues. Provides training and guidance to subordinate staff. Supervises the work of subordinate personnel.

Additional Duties: Assists with the development and preparation of the department budget. Assists in the preparation of Requests for Proposals (RFP) and bid documents

Supervised by: Receives general direction from the Director of Information Technology or his/her designate.
Thorough knowledge of a variety of communication protocols, network architecture (routers, switches), SAN storage solutions and Windows /Active Directory. Thorough knowledge of VMWare. Thorough knowledge of Internet connectivity and Cyber security. Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP. Knowledge of MS Exchange and O365. Ability to design, maintain and support Microsoft Exchange in a 3000+ user, multi-site environment. Ability to direct and supervise the work of technical staff and vendors as required and on a project basis. Ability to work in a large Active Directory and VMWare environment. Ability to deal effectively with others in team/workgroup activities. Ability to implement security systems and controls. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and users in other departments.

Bachelor's degree with three years experience as an IT systems administrator.

License or Certificate: Any of these certifications are preferred: CompTIA Server +, Security+, VMWare Information Security, and CCNA.

Grade: NMEA 21
