About This Position

Contract, Part Time - 10-20 hours per week, no benefits

The Call-A-Bus Driver is a part-time contract position responsible for safely transporting passengers using the City's Call-A-Bus service. This includes providing transportation for elementary-aged children to after-school programs during the school year and to camp outings in the summer. The driver also supports the City’s senior and disabled populations by transporting them to medical appointments, shopping trips, lectures, monthly movie outings, and other senior enrichment activities.

Schedule & Hours:
This is a part-time position typically requiring 10 to 20 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be needed. In instances where other drivers are on leave, this role may temporarily increase to up to 40 hours per week. Work hours may vary, but generally fall between Monday and Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.


  • Adhering to the Prince George’s County Public School calendar, the Part-Time Call-A-Bus Driver will transport school children to a daily aftercare program within a 6-mile radius of the city.
  • Transport City seniors and residents with disabilities to a monthly movie outing, nutritional tour of a local grocery store, lunch and lecture series, weekly farmers market in season, and to senior programs and special events throughout the area.
  • Arrive at the requested locations on time.
  • Ability to utilize hands-free communication devices to receive and initiate calls.
  • Ability to utilize hands-free navigational devices.
  • Assist all passengers to and from the vehicle as necessary.
  • Follow established procedures for using the mechanical lift to ensure wheelchair passengers and passengers using walkers are safely transported.
  • Secure the vehicle at all stops according to established procedures to ensure the safety of all passengers.
  • Fuel the bus as necessary.
  • Perform daily inspection of vehicle, both inside and out, and immediately advise any vehicle maintenance or repair needs to the Community Services Manager.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness at all times and the end of each bus run.
  • Report any traffic or accident incident immediately to the Community Services Manager.

  • Knowledge of traffic and vehicle regulations. Use of safe driving habits.
  • Familiarity with streets in the City of Hyattsville and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to operate the lift on the bus according to instructions and to safely secure all passengers to avoid injuries.
  • Ability to maintain a harmonious and courteous working relationship with residents, supervisors, and the public, communicating effectively with all.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • At least one year of related work experience in transportation, caregiving, or community service.
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) Endorsement issued by Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must maintain a good to excellent driving record.
  • Must pass:
    • City of Hyattsville background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening.

    • Must be able to pass a required DOT physical examination.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
