Job Description
Global Kids’ (GK) mission is to educate, activate, and inspire youth to act on critical issues facing our world. Over its 37-year history, the organization has engaged thousands of young people in its innovative youth development programs that promote global awareness and action, building their agency to affect change in their community and beyond. In 2024, Global Kids will undergo significant growth in NYC, further scaling its programs to serve over 15,000 youth in New York City and Washington, D.C., through its core service delivery model that fosters academic achievement, social-emotional wellness, college and career readiness, and global citizenship.
The Managing Director – New York City will lead in the development, implementation and stewardship of GK’s core service delivery model, which promotes the principles of global education and positive youth development in the NYC metro area. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director will provide leadership and oversight of all NYC program operations, ensuring that program quality is of the highest caliber, outcomes are achieved, and fidelity to the mission is maintained. The Managing Director will help steer the strategic growth of the program in NYC. through a combination of program development, program management, fundraising, and partnership building.
Leadership, Staff Management & Organizational Strategy for New York City Programs
- In coordination with the Executive Director and Senior Management Team, lead in the overall development, implementation, and management of GK’s program service delivery model in the New York City Market.
- Directly supervise Sr. Program Directors and together work with other program staff to build their skills and confidence to mentor, encourage, and motivate youth.
- Assist and guide the team in troubleshooting program and staff performance challenges. Train and mentor senior directors on how to proactively engage in planning to improve program management.
- Deploy staff resources efficiently and effectively toward organizational goals; work with staff to balance workload and effort and provide regular feedback so that key staff can continuously improve their supervision and mentoring skills.
- Create and support a high-performing culture across programs adhering to GK’s core values.
- Develop a team-based environment to motivate and inspire staff to work collaboratively toward the vision and goal by clearly communicating the agency vision, implementing yearly staff development plans, and mentoring.
- Coordinate with the Executive Director, senior management team, and program director to identify and create leadership and professional development opportunities for NYC GK Staff.
- Establish annual departmental and staff goals and objectives, and track results against these goals as well as accountability protocols.
- In partnership with the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team, develop and implement new initiatives that reflect and advance GK’s mission.
- Monitor emerging needs among key stakeholders such as clients, government, philanthropy, and employers.
- Provide regular reporting to the Board-Level Program Committee and Full Board of Directors on DC program performance and highlights that demonstrate the impact of GK services.
Evaluation, Quality Assurance, and Program Scaling
- Ensure GK is achieving both qualitative and quantitative outcomes of its programs and services with the highest integrity
- Lead in the documentation and reporting of these outcomes, in consultation with GK’s Sr. Director for Academic Programs and Evaluation
Resource Development & Management
- Direct GK’s application, contract development and compliance on all institutional and government fund development efforts.
- In partnership with the Finance Department, support the compilation of claims for payment.
- Serve as GK liaison to all local, state, and federal government agencies supporting GK’s work in NYC
- In partnership with the Resource Development department, develop GK grant proposals and support reporting for all foundation, corporate and major gifts.
- Support planning and execution of all GK NYC and national fundraising events, with specific emphasis on ensuring GK programming is highlighted appropriately and consistently
- Lead department in developing and monitoring its annual budget, including stewardship of GK procurement guidelines
- Staff and facilitate GK’s Washington, DC Advisory Board
Human Resources
- In partnership with the human resources department, serve as lead hiring manager for NYC Programs, working with direct reports to identify staffing needs and codify position scope/functions for recruitment.
- Vet and sign off on candidate recommendations for hire
- Develop and steward the onboarding process for new hires for the department, which includes the development and implementation of all training activities, probationary work plans
- Review and approve all annual performance evaluations, improvement plans, and professional development plans for department staff
- Review and sign off on disciplinary actions for staff in the department
- Sign off on all assigned timesheets and leave requests
Relationship Management & External Relations
- In partnership with the Executive Director and senior management team, work to increase and enhance GK’s visibility among key stakeholders.
- Cultivate and manage relationships with program partners
- Represent GK on relevant committees, advisories, as well as at speaking engagements, conference panels, and trainings.
- Prepare direct reports to represent GK on relevant committees, advisories, speaking engagements, conference panels, and training.
- Establish and support program directors’ stewardship of school and community partnerships to support achievement of program goals.
- Master’s degree in a related field and ten years of relevant and progressive leadership experience or bachelor’s degree and fifteen years of relevant and progressive leadership experience.
- Experience developing and managing multiple program sites, supervising personnel at all professional levels, and managing teams in both in-person and virtual settings.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to working in culturally diverse settings and using DEI and antiracist practices.
- Experience and success in the development and implementation of interactive youth development, global education, and/or civic engagement/social justice programming.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of outcomes measurement, quality assurance tools, and other methods to measure impact and ensure achievement of high program standards.
- Experience in the development and facilitation of professional development activities that promote high program standards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings.
- Strong work ethic, initiative, creativity, and willingness to learn.
- Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient with technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and other online learning tools.
- Self-starter, self-disciplined
- International experience and foreign language are a plus.
