Working Title:

Position Summary:
The On-Call Physical Therapist provides specialized evaluation, consultation, intervention, and developmental support services for infants in the UNMH Newborn Intensive Care Unit that are enrolled in the New Mexico Family Infant Toddler (FIT) Program. Working as a member of a multidisciplinary early intervention team, the Physical Therapist assesses motor development, movement patterns, strength, posture, mobility, neuromotor functioning, and developmental skills to identify needs and develop individualized intervention recommendations.

The Physical Therapist collaborates with families, Family Service Coordinators, developmental specialists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to promote optimal developmental outcomes and support family-centered care. Responsibilities include participation in multidisciplinary evaluations, ongoing assessment, intervention planning, caregiver coaching, consultation, documentation, and participation in Individualized Family Service Plan development and implementation.

NM Licensure as a Physical Therapist is required

Essential functions include the following:
  • Conduct multidisciplinary developmental evaluations and assessments.
  • Assess gross motor development, muscle tone, posture, movement patterns, strength, balance, and functional mobility.
  • Develop individualized intervention strategies and therapy recommendations.
  • Provide caregiver coaching and education to support developmental progress within daily routines.
  • Participate in IFSP development and ongoing review processes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to coordinate services and support family goals.
  • Complete required documentation, reports, and billing activities.
  • Provide consultation regarding positioning, handling, mobility, adaptive equipment, and developmental supports.
  • Support transition planning and coordination with community providers and medical specialists.

Conditions of Employment:
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Discipline-specific licensure/certification is a requirement for positions in this classification.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • CPR Certified.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Early Intervention/Part C services
  • Experience with NICU graduates and medically fragile infants
  • Knowledge of New Mexico FIT requirements
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
