Site Description

The Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school that serves incarcerated men and women aged 18-22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice-involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing.

Position Overview

The Special Education Teacher/Case Manager will provide individualized instruction and case management services to students within a secure facility. In one class period, the Special Education Teacher/Case Manager will support scholars enrolled in multiple courses—including accelerated offerings—in the following content areas: English/ELA, math, science, and history. The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering specialized instructional strategies to meet scholars' needs.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Instructional Delivery

Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for scholars in their units. Adapt and/or modify lessons to accommodate scholars' varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels. Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.

Case Management, Compliance, and Reporting

Serve as case manager for students with IEPs. Develop, review, and update IEPs in compliance with IDEA. Conduct IEP meetings, reevaluations, and manifestation determinations. Monitor and document student progress. Ensure compliance with all timelines and documentation requirements.

Collaboration, Support, and Guidance

Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.

Other Duties as Assigned

Tasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)
  • Knowledge of IDEA and IEP development.
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)

Salary and Benefits

Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area. Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page. In addition, we offer a robust benefits plan, including health care coverage, HSA/FSA and dependent care accounts, voluntary dental and vision, employer-paid short-term and long-term disability options, commuter benefits, a 401k retirement savings plan with employer contribution offered after 1 year of service, along with the opportunity to positively impact students with a broad range of experiences and backgrounds.

The pay range for this role is:
67,500 - 107,500 USD per year(MAA@ Department of Corrections)
