Job Description
Position Summary
Substitute childcare staff support lead and assistant teachers in creating a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. This is an on-call, flexible position. Substitutes may be contacted in advance for planned coverage or on short notice the morning/day care is needed.
Strong communication and teamwork are essential, as you will work closely with other staff members to support children and classroom operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assist with implementing engaging and age-appropriate activities for children
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing classroom environment at all times
- Anticipate and respond to each child’s individual needs with care and attentiveness
- Communicate openly with the childcare director regarding questions or concerns
- Maintain a positive, professional tone that promotes a collaborative team environment
- Communicate daily with lead and assistant teachers and the childcare director about classroom updates and needs
- Build strong, positive relationships with children, families, and team members
- Ensure compliance with all licensing regulations and center policies
- Monitor supplies and notify the director when materials need replenishing
- Maintain professional and respectful communication with families
- Participate in bi-monthly staff meetings, safety trainings, drills, and required education
- May be assigned to an emergency response team
- Complete all DHHS training requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field preferred
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Registered with Maine Roads to Quality (MRTQ) or willingness to register and complete required training
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have a high school diploma (or equivalent), or be enrolled in a high school, GED, or HiSET program
- Ability and willingness to comply with all applicable laws and regulations
- Ability to provide safe, compassionate childcare services
- Demonstrated history of honesty and lawful conduct
- Strong judgment and commitment to child safety and well-being
- Must not engage in any actions detrimental to the welfare of children
- Successful completion of all required DHHS background checks
- On-call, flexible schedule
- Coverage may be scheduled in advance or requested same-day
- Team-oriented, supportive childcare environment
