Job Description
What We're Looking For
More than anything, we're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys recruiting and understands that great hiring starts with great conversations.
The right person will be:
- Naturally curious and interested in learning people's stories.
- A strong listener who asks thoughtful follow-up questions.
- Organized and able to manage multiple openings while keeping candidates, interview notes, job postings, and follow-up activities organized.
- Comfortable adapting quickly as hiring priorities change.
- Someone who looks beyond the application and wants to understand the person behind the résumé.
We don't believe the best candidates are always the ones with the perfect résumé. Some of the best people we've hired didn't check every box on paper—they had the attitude, work ethic, curiosity, and potential to succeed. Great recruiters don't simply fill positions; they help the team make better hiring decisions by identifying those qualities and providing meaningful insight.
About the Role
Hi-Way Paving is a heavy civil contractor specializing in concrete paving, storm drainage, excavation, highways, and airfields throughout the Southeast.
As a Construction Recruiter, you'll spend much of your day sourcing candidates, making outbound calls, conducting phone interviews, documenting what you learn, and building talent pipelines for the skilled craft professionals who keep our projects moving.
No two days look the same. One day you may be focused on hiring laborers. The next you may be recruiting mechanics, operators, CDL drivers, concrete finishers, or field leadership. Priorities change quickly, and we're looking for someone who is flexible, organized, and enjoys the challenge of finding the right people.
What You'll Do
- Recruit skilled craft professionals including operators, mechanics, concrete finishers, CDL drivers, laborers, quality control personnel, and field leadership.
- Review applications, identify qualified candidates, and conduct meaningful phone interviews.
- Prepare detailed interview notes and candidate recommendations to help hiring managers and the Talent Manager make informed decisions.
- Build and maintain talent pipelines through proactive sourcing, referrals, networking, and job boards.
- Coordinate interviews, offers, and pre-employment activities.
- Maintain accurate recruiting activity within Paylocity and our Applicant Tracking System.
- Keep job postings, candidate pipelines, interview notes, and follow-up activities organized and current.
- Partner with the Talent Manager and hiring managers to understand hiring needs and adjust recruiting efforts as priorities change.
- Help create a positive candidate experience from the first conversation through onboarding.
- Support hiring events and occasional travel to project locations as needed.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of recruiting experience preferred.
- Construction recruiting experience is highly preferred.
- Spanish/English bilingual skills are highly preferred.
- Experience with Paylocity is a significant plus.
- Experience using an Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
- Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to obtain security clearances required for airport or other restricted-access projects.
- Willingness to travel occasionally as business needs require.
Preferred Location
We prefer someone located near one of our major operations:
- Charlotte, NC
- Nashville, TN
Highly qualified remote candidates will also be considered.
Why Hi-Way?
You'll work directly with the Talent Manager and become part of a growing talent function that plays an important role in the success of our business. You'll learn our recruiting approach, build relationships with hiring managers across the company, and help identify the people who will keep our projects moving for years to come.
