The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. Program Overview
The CHAI China country team collaborates closely with both local and global partners, which may include organizations such as the Gates Foundation—to improve access to high-quality, affordable health products in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To realize this objective, CHAI actively partners with an extensive network of stakeholders, including both public sector partners and Chinese suppliers.
The CHAI China team is seeking a candidate who will provide onsite consulting and work on strategic projects at CHAI’s partner’s office, such as the Gates Foundation China Country Office (CCO), collaborating with the partner’s health team.
The partner is a leading philanthropic foundation fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. It was founded on a simple premise – people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the chance to live healthy, productive lives.
The health team of the partner focuses on orchestrating collaborations in China and other regions to accelerate the translation, development, and commercialization of impactful, foundation-prioritized health solutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Related products include vaccines, biologics, diagnostics, treatments, nutritional products, medical devices, and more.
The selected candidate will assist the partner in managing relevant programs, portfolios, and pipelines, as well as supporting strategy review and partnership management.
Position Overview
The candidate will mainly provide strategic and analytical support to inform the partner on market landscaping, strategy development and portfolio management. The candidate will be centrally coordinated and supported by the CHAI China, and s/he will work in close collaboration with the CHAI China team to utilize its technical and programmatic resources to execute his or her responsibilities.
The candidate will primarily be engaged in drug-related programs and projects that aim to address unmet needs in LMICs. They will focus on:
- Opportunity scouting, landscaping, screening, and identification of early- to late-stage investments, as well as related assessment on manufacturing, CMC, and other partnerships;
- Business development, management of partnerships and grants;
- Establishment and expansion of external partnership network in China for CHAI and its partners, including with various stakeholders such as accelerator program teams, MNCs, biotech, investment firms, industry associations, academic research institutions, governmental and non-governmental entities, and Product Development Partners (PDPs).
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual with problem-solving, effective communication, and project management skill sets. The candidate must be able to function independently, be flexible, and have a strong commitment to excellence. Responsibilities:
The candidate’s main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conduct research that leads to the identification and formation of specific projects. Relevant scope includes disease context, clinical development status, regulatory pathways, manufacturing and CMC, product portfolios, health outcomes, and global health interventions
- Perform primary (e.g. expert interviews, industry conferences, site visits) and secondary research (e.g. official statistics, commercial databases, trade press); develop new methodologies (e.g. AI) relevant and appropriate for such analysis, project management and other objectives
- Extract key findings and provide strategic recommendations for development of new programs, project management, communication, and process improvement
- Assist in designing, developing and implementing project activities as required by the partnership framework, work plan and budget
- Prepare high-quality background papers, technical briefs, project reports and presentations for engaging both internal and external stakeholders
- Project/grant management, including reviewing inquiries, grant proposals and reports, conducting regular check-in with grantee, and providing support as required.
- Establish and expand expert and partner network to streamline investment screening and identification, deal structuring and negotiation, as well as provide technical and other assistance to the partner’s drug portfolio
- Maintain strong integration with the CHAI China team to utilize best practices, knowledge, and network within CHAI
- Other responsibilities as needed
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (e.g. MS, PhD) in pharmaceutical science/engineering, biology or a related field of science
- 10+ years of work experience in the pharma/biotech/healthcare industry, management consulting, PE/VC and/or similar functions
- Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading, and writing in a professional setting)
- Proficient in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Project/grant management and stakeholder relationship management experience in public and private sector settings
- Ability to work independently without extensive structural or operational support
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in high-pressure situations and a fast-paced, multicultural environment
- Ability to achieve maximum efficiency and impact with limited human and financial resources
- Available for at least 20% travel
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the healthcare industry in China (e.g., healthcare consulting, clinical trials, drug manufacturing, CMC, regulatory issues, supply chain, global health, or commercial drug development)
- Experience with business development, market access, brand building, new product launch, drug pricing and marketing
- Experience working and living in low-income countries or resource-limited settings
