Job Description
Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) is seeking a patient, resourceful, and community-minded Temporary Digital Navigator to help older adults and adults with disabilities build confidence using technology and gain greater access to the digital world through June 30, 2027.
The Digital Navigator provides individualized and small-group support to community members in San Francisco’s Districts 9 and 11 who may need help accessing affordable internet service, obtaining electronic devices, or learning basic digital skills.
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working directly with people, solving problems, and helping individuals become more comfortable and independent with technology. Support is provided primarily in person and may also be provided by phone, email, text, Zoom, or other communication methods.
The Digital Navigator reports to the Senior Program Manager.
What You'll DoMeet individually with clients to assess their digital access, technology, device, and training needs.
Develop individualized digital service plans based on each client’s goals and priorities.
Provide patient, step-by-step coaching on basic technology skills, internet use, devices, applications, and online services.
Conduct individual and group technology workshops in person and virtually.
Help eligible clients identify and apply for free or affordable home internet services.
Connect clients with affordable devices, technology resources, repairs, and technical support.
Assist clients with using technology to meet everyday needs and increase their independence and connection to resources.
Follow up on referrals and client needs in a timely manner and track progress and outcomes.
Maintain accurate and timely client records and documentation.
Prepare monthly summaries of activities, successes, challenges, emerging needs, and program outcomes.
Identify trends and barriers affecting digital access and help BHNC advocate for greater digital equity and inclusion.
Collaborate with BHNC staff, community partners, and service providers.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable with technology but, just as importantly, comfortable teaching people who may not be.
You should bring:
Patience and enthusiasm for helping older adults and people with limited technology experience.
Ability to explain technology and digital concepts in clear, simple, non-technical language.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to build trust and rapport with people from diverse cultural, linguistic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
Cultural sensitivity and a commitment to providing respectful, equitable services.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Flexibility, creativity, good judgment, and appropriate professional boundaries.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through digital platforms.
Ability to maintain accurate records and follow through on client needs and referrals.
A positive, resilient attitude and a sense of humor.
A valid driver's license held for at least three years.
Experience working with older adults, adults with disabilities, community-based organizations, digital literacy programs, or culturally diverse communities is highly valued.
Physical RequirementsThis position requires frequent computer use, typing, sitting, and interaction with clients. The employee must also be able to move throughout community and program locations, including navigating stairs and hills, and occasionally push, pull, lift, or carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
