About This Position

Reports to the Director, Pharmacy Services. Manages the daily operations of pharmaceutical services ensuring that established policies and procedures are followed in accordance with objectives of the Memorial Hospital, Beacon Health System, and the medical staff. Assists in evaluating and developing new programs and implements changes to existing programs to enhance quality of patient care. Assures department policies and procedures reflect legal, regulatory, and accrediting standards.

In conjunction with the Director, manages the activities of the Pharmacy Department by:

  • Developing short and long-term goals and objectives and implementing departmental policies and procedures that will ensure goals and objectives are met.
  • Assisting the Director in developing the Department's annual operating budget.
  • Screening, interviewing, hiring, evaluating job performance, coaching and (when necessary) discipline staff.
  • Recommending operational/procedural changes as indicated.
  • Interpreting, enforcing, and supporting the terms and conditions of the Union bargaining agreement.
  • Representing the department in meetings.

Quality assurance of pharmacy products and services:

  • Specifying quality and source of pharmaceutical products and equipment.
  • Assisting in negotiating contracts for identified products and equipment.
  • Reviewing expense reports, monitoring budget performance, and auditing the use of targeted pharmaceuticals.
  • Ensure financial accuracy by managing and reconciling pharmacy transactions, monitoring billing and payment processes, and auditing procedures to maintain precise and compliant financial records.

Assures pharmaceutical services are current with new developments and in compliance with legal, regulatory, and accrediting standards by:

  • Reviewing professional literature and attending educational programs to maintain knowledge of current trends and pertinent issues and innovations in pharmacy practice.
  • Recommending professional development opportunities for pharmacy staff.
  • Participating in and assuring implementation of decisions of committees and QI teams relating to pharmaceutical services.
  • Assisting in development of new programs, revising existing programs and performing financial analyses to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care services to meet the needs of patients and the Medical Staff.
  • Assuring department policies and procedures reflect legal, regulatory and accrediting standards and that the policies and procedures are followed.
  • Preparing periodic summary reports for review.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelors or Master’s degree, or able to be obtained within 2 years of employment. Candidates must have increasing levels of responsibility in a healthcare setting, with previous management experience being preferred. Must hold a professional license with the capability of handling medications or must obtain within 6 months of employment.

  • Demonstrates a high-level technical skills/knowledge of standard operating procedures for the management and provision of pharmacy services and a comprehensive knowledge of federal and state standards and the requirements of regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Demonstrates leadership/management skills necessary to elicit cooperation and support from others.
  • Requires organizational and analytical skills necessary to develop, evaluate and administer policies and procedures, assist in budget development, and maintain staffing levels.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to interact and communicate effectively with a wide range of internal and external contacts. Also requires the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office environment.
  • Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous materials.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
