Position Summary

The Central Sterile Technician at WPHPA Armonk is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of surgical instruments and equipment specific to ear, nose, and throat (ENT) procedures. This role ensures that all medical instruments are thoroughly cleaned, sterilized, and available for use in medical procedures, adhering to all safety and sterilization standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

  • Decontamination: Cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments and endoscope equipment using manual or automated methods.
  • Follow established protocols to ensure that all instruments are free from contaminants.
  • Inspection: Inspecting instruments and equipment for damage or wear and ensuring they are in proper working order.
  • Perform routine maintenance on sterilization equipment and report any malfunctions or necessary repairs.
  • Sterilization: Operating sterilization equipment such as STERRAD to ensure instruments are sterile and safe for use.
  • Ensure that all assembled trays and packs are labeled accurately and dated.
  • Assembly: Assembling surgical instrument trays and sets according to established protocols.
  • Inventory Management: Managing inventory of sterile supplies, ensuring that adequate stock levels are maintained, and reordering supplies as needed.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of sterilization processes, including load contents, cycle parameters, and biological indicators.
  • Ensure compliance with all documentation requirements as per regulatory and practice standards.
  • Compliance and safety: Adhere to infection control and sterilization standards and guidelines set by regulatory bodies and hospital policies.
  • Participate in regular training and stay updated on best practices in sterile processing.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with healthcare team members and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments and procedural supplies.
  • This role requires attention to detail, knowledge of sterilization techniques, and the ability to follow strict protocols and guidelines.
  • Serve as role model and mentor to staff regarding sterilization process.
  • Facilitating operational efficiency in the department
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Certification in sterile processing (e.g., CRCST - Certified Registered Central Service Technician) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in sterile processing, preferably in an ENT or surgical practice.
  • Strong understanding of sterilization techniques, infection control, and decontamination processes. Familiarity with ENT surgical instruments is a plus.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access).
  • Ability to communicate with patients, families, and hospital employees effectively.
