General Overview:

Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers has an immediate full time opening for a genetic counselor to join our vast team of physicians and currently one other certified genetic counselor. The role of genetic counselors will become even more prominent as we continue to strengthen and grow our Genetic Counseling department. Genetic counselors within Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers provide education, risk assessment, counseling, support, and follow-up to individuals and families who have or may have an inherited cancer susceptibility. The genetic counselor will work independently as well as collaboratively with other members of our interdisciplinary team to provide professional genetic counseling services.

This a hybrid role and the genetic counselor would be expected to live within the greater Phoenix area and have the ability to commute to several of our valley-wide clinics. Genetic counseling appointments are conducted both via telehealth and in-person appointments. In-office time will be required for certain aspects of the job including in-person meetings, education events, certain administrative tasks, and marketing events.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Educates patients and their families on potential inherited cancer risks by
  1. Obtaining and examining personal and family medical histories
  2. Constructing family histories in pedigree format
  3. Providing risk assessment on likelihood of an inherited cancer susceptibility
  4. Discussion of genetic diseases as they relate to oncology
  5. Coordinating and interpreting genetic testing for patients and families
• Provides supportive guidance and resources to patients and their families to help them make informed decisions about their health
• Acts as a genetic consultant for a large team of physicians and recommends appropriate tests, helps identify high risk patients, and communicates any necessary management recommendations to the clinical team
• Remains up to date on current advances in the field of genetics and genetic counseling as it pertains to oncology
• Performs other duties including but not limited to: dictating, creating patient education materials, writing patient letters, and attending various marketing events
• Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and independently with excellent time management and organizational skills

Education and Certification:

• Master’s Degree in Human or Medical Genetics or Genetic Counseling

• Board certified or eligible for certification as Genetic Counselor by American Board of Medical Genetics or American Board of Genetic Counseling
