Crescent CIty is accepting applications for the Police Sergeant position through 11/15/20024

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, takes control of patrol, investigations and law enforcement operations on an assigned shift; personally performs all types of law enforcement duties; and does related work as required. This position is supervised by the Chief of Police. This position exercises supervision over police officers and other assigned personnel.

Examples of Essential Job Functions: (include but not limited to the following)

• Supervises the complete law enforcement activities and operations during an assigned shift;
• Takes charge at the scene of emergencies or crimes and directs officers;
• Supervises and participates in the protection of crime scenes, the gathering of evidence, and questioning of suspects;
• Gives officers direction in preparing written reports and cases for trial; reviews the work and written reports of officers;
• Prepares a variety of reports pertaining to crimes, accidents, or shift activity;
• Maintains discipline and insures that Department rules and policies are followed;
• Conducts in-service training and evaluates the performance of officers;
• As necessary, responds to calls for service.
• Performs other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for this job position)

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education and/or Experience:

Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade; an Associate’s Degree in Police Science/Criminal Justice, Public Administration or Business Administration is preferred. Four (4) years of current full-time experience in law enforcement work comparable to that of a Police Officer in the City of Crescent City. Field Training Officer experience is preferred.

License/Certificate:

Valid class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record; must maintain driver’s license in compliance with the City employee driving standards; Valid POST Intermediate Certificate; and completion of a POST Supervisor’s School within one year of appointment. Possession of a POST Supervisory Certificate is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: (The following are a representative sample of the KSA’s necessary to perform the essential duties of the position)

Knowledge of:

Modern law enforcement methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, basic investigations and identification techniques; recent court decisions and arrest procedures; principles of supervision and training; Community Policing principles.

Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Effectively communicate in the English language, both verbally and in writing; Deal successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone; courteously respond to community issues, concerns and needs; make adjustments to standard operating procedures as is appropriate; work independently; understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Provide lead supervision to other law enforcement personnel; analyze situations effectively, and interpret and apply laws and regulations; exercise good judgment in personal encounters and relationships with the general public; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, department employees, and the general public. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to observe and identify criminal activity, read and report license plates, and efficiently operate law enforcement equipment and firearms as required; sufficient clarity of hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to maintain two-way communications in person, on the telephone, and on the radio; sufficient clarity of speech or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner; Sufficient ability to compose a variety of comprehensive, logical, well organized and factual reports, records, correspondence, and related documents; sufficient ability to understand policy and procedures and comprehend and interpret laws and regulations and specific materials related to the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work a variety of shifts; work is performed in an office setting and in a patrol vehicle, and outdoor fieldwork is also required.
