What You’ll Do
As a Mental Health Tech, you will report to the Manager, Patient Care Services. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other designated authority, facilitates the maintenance of the therapeutic environment and assists patients with daily living activities. Functions as a group leader and assists with patients' recreational and social activities. Observes and reports patients' behavior patterns and intervenes as required. Receives guests, answers the telephone, and facilitates productive communications with patients, families, physicians and team members.
Mental Health Tech Job Responsibilities
- Maintains a safe, therapeutic behavioral health environment through patient orientation, observation, documentation, and crisis intervention.
- Assists with admissions, patient belongings, RN assessments, ECT care, and care plan communication.
- Provides therapeutic communication and supports patients experiencing crisis or trauma.
- Supports unit operations by managing schedules, groups, patient belongings, showers, and laundry.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, rounding, and room checks.
- Communicates professionally with patients, families, visitors, and interdisciplinary team members.
Organizational & Professional Responsibilities:
- Complies with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
- Maintains required education, competencies, licensure, and certifications.
- Participates in meetings, completes assigned duties, and works flexible schedules as needed.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and crisis response skills.
- Basic computer proficiency and accurate documentation.
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced behavioral health setting.
What You Bring
As a Mental Health Tech, you’ll bring a high level of knowledge, competency in performing patient care procedures, assessments, treatment, and techniques, and your advanced analytical skills are necessary to solve complex problems and make decisions related to patient care. You demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, visitors, physicians, and others. You demonstrate the ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner. You have an understanding of the need to be responsive and reasonably adaptable for scheduling purposes, when necessary, due to extenuating circumstances in support of co-workers and department functions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous clerical or patient care experience desired.
- Nurse Assistant certification preferred.
- Previous successful experience as a psychiatric technician or successful completion of at least two courses in psychology or counseling at an accredited college or university preferred.
