About This Position

Jefferson Community Health & Life is looking for a Certified Coder to work full-time. This is NOT a REMOTE position.

Hours: M through Friday 8am - 4:30pm

No weekends and no holidays.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinic Coder is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and accurately coding patient medical records to support timely and compliant billing. This includes assigning appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services while ensuring adherence to legal, regulatory, and medical standards. The role supports revenue cycle accuracy, internal audits, and quality assurance initiatives within the clinic.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC or CPC-A), preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Knowledgeable of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology preferred.
  • Experience with ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding preferred.
  • Understanding of health insurance and billing practices preferred
  • Proficient in computer systems and electronic health records
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Medical Record Review and Coding

  • Review electronic medical records for completeness and accuracy
  • Assign diagnosis, evaluation and management., and procedure codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS
  • Verify supporting documentation aligns with assigned codes
  • Ensure coding meets medical, legal, and regulatory standards
  • Submit codes accurately and timely for billing and reimbursement
  • Perform edit checks and correct data entry errors prior to transmittal
  • Review all documents for authorized signatures and proper patient identification

Quality and Accuracy Review

  • Conduct coding audits to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Identify discrepancies or documentation gaps and work with clinical staff to resolve them
  • Appraise records for accurate and complete justification of diagnosis and treatment
  • Research coding questions for other staff to assure quality and accuracy

Compliance and Regulatory Standards

  • Maintain compliance with federal/state regulations and internal policies, including HIPAA, infection control, and safety standards
  • Participate in internal and external audits as required
  • Ensure alignment with JCH&L Compliance Program and Critical Access Hospital regulations

Communication and Team Collaboration

  • Communicate with clinic staff to clarify documentation or coding issues
  • Assist in orientation and training of new team members
  • Participate in department meetings and share expertise with peers

Performance Improvement and Professional Development

  • Identify and report process concerns, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement projects and JCH&L committees
  • Complete required annual education and maintain coding knowledge through ongoing training and resources
  • Serve as a positive role model and contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • Attend department meetings, educational programs, and in-services to stay updated on coding regulations and best practices
  • Assist in training and orientation of new team members
