About This Position
The City of Avondale is proud to offer a unique, paid internship program that provides hands-on experience across various City departments. This part-time, temporary position runs for 14 weeks each semester – one in the fall and one in the spring – with interns working up to 20 hours per week. Each session will be hosted by a different City department, allowing students enrolled in an accredited college program related to the field to gain valuable, hands-on experience. This internship is subject to funding availability and does not include benefits. Priority consideration will be given to Avondale residents.
Fall 2025 Internship Opportunity – Sustainability Division, Public Works Department
The City of Avondale is seeking a passionate and driven college student to join the Sustainability Division. This position will lead the development of a Community Sustainability Grant Program, aimed at providing small grants directly to residents, schools, and community organizations or businesses to support local sustainability-focused projects. These projects may include initiatives such as community gardens, tree plantings, energy efficiency improvements, composting efforts, water conservation projects, and more.
Through this work, the intern will help empower community members to take direct action toward creating a healthier, more resilient Avondale. The program will also foster stronger partnerships between the City and its residents, build environmental awareness, and encourage grassroots sustainability leadership at the community level.
The selected intern will play a key role in developing a Community Sustainability Grant Program, helping shape it from concept to presentation.
Learning Opportunities:

•Learn how municipal funds can be used to support grassroots sustainability projects

•Build a strong portfolio piece through the creation and implementation of a citywide program
Assist in the development of a Community Sustainability Grant Program, including structure, eligibility guidelines, and evaluation criteria.
Research successful municipal grant programs for best practices and insights.
Conduct public engagement to gather feedback and promote the grant program.
Design and draft the grant application, including forms and online submission materials.
Collaborate with the City’s Marketing and Public Relations Department to develop communication materials to promote the grant program to the public.
Deliver final proposal to Department leadership for review and approval.

Must be currently enrolled at an accredited community college or four-year college/university.
No direct local government experience is required for this position.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
