Overview of position:

The Elementary Librarian and Library Science Educator will pilot the Whiteman campus’ first library. This position supports the academic growth of students by designing, implementing, and refining a yearlong K–4 Library Special curriculum aligned to literacy, social-emotional learning, STEM and grade level content-area standards. This role is responsible for the purchasing, organizing, and maintenance of library materials and databases. The Elementary Librarian and Library Science Educator will also instruct daily classes of 25-30 Kindergarten-4th grade students.

The selected candidate will report to the Whiteman Elementary School Principal.

Pay and Benefits:

• Employees at DLS are compensated in accordance with other Denver-area charter schools. The annual salary of $57,000- $63,000
• 8 days of PTO with an option to roll days to the following school year. PTO will be prorated to reflect a mid-year start.

Essential Functions and Objectives

• Design, implement, and refine a yearlong K–4 Library Special curriculum aligned to literacy, social-emotional learning, STEM and grade level content-area standards.
• Uses a backward design approach to embed 21st Century Skills throughout units of study, preparing students to thrive in a global society with lessons that are engaging, sustainable, and applicable to everyday life.
• Uses various types of technology to promote learning and creativity.
• Continuously reflect on student engagement and outcomes to improve library instruction and programming.
• Perform Librarian tasks:
  • Create and use databases of library materials
  • Organize library materials so they are easy to find
  • Research new books and materials
  • Maintain existing collections and choose new books, videos, and other materials
  • Research computers and other equipment for purchase, as needed
  • Prepare library budgets
• Performs Library Science Educator tasks:
  • Create lesson plans for weekly K-4 Library elective class
  • Instruct daily classes of 25-30 Kindergarten-4th grade students
  • Communicate with primary teachers regarding in class curriculum to bridge a connection between classroom learning and Library time
  • Create grade-appropriate lessons that build research, digital literacy, and information literacy skills, particularly for 3rd–4th grade students
  • Prepare 3rd-4th grade students’ technology skills for standardized tests required by the state (typing, maneuvering program tools, technology-based written communication)
  • Design innovation projects and Makerspace-style learning opportunities that are related to literacy and encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving
  • Corrects student behavior to maintain conductive learning environment
  • Assist with daily student arrival/dismissal duties, and/or other student supervision as needed outside of the classroom

• Works with parents, colleagues, and students to build relationships with community members to deepen learning opportunities.
• Can communicate with a wide range of students while providing scaffolding for all learners.
• Utilizes formative and summative assessments to determine student pacing and needs.
• Additional tasks and/or assignments to further the mission and vision of the school, as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Library Science, or related field
• Proficiency with various forms of technology; computers, software, etc.
• Ability to operate standard office and library equipment (e.g., copier, barcode scanner, laminator);
• Experience working with students aged 6-10 years old;
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, reach, and stand for extended periods;
• Comfortable with routine movement such as shelving books and shifting library materials;
• Ability to speak, write, and read English fluently

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Education, Library Science, or related field
• Fluent in Spanish and/or Mandarin
