GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Infectious Disease Medical Assistant will be responsible for providing exceptional healthcare and customer service by assisting with the examination, testing and treatment of patients under the direct supervision of a Primary Care Provider or Nurse Practitioner.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES

  • Escorts and fully prepares patients for medical visits including measuring vital signs, completing a Health Risk Appraisal, reviewing electronic health chart for accuracy, administering medications, ensuring diagnostic testing results, and scanning paper documents into the electronic medical record
  • Reviews health provider orders, administering medications to best practice standards and performing treatments as required
  • Appropriately and accurately documents outcome of treatments and interventions
  • Reviews labs and reports abnormal results of any service to the primary care provider per organization protocol
  • Assists patients with appointment scheduling, insurance confirmation, and other related matters
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients and maintains cleanliness of work areas
  • Performs basic clerical duties including phone, fax, copier, and shredding protected patient information
  • Performs basic materials management functions including monitoring, stocking, and ordering of supplies
  • Uses standard precautions with all patients, specimens, and equipment
  • Uses needle stick precautions with all patients, specimens, and equipment
  • Documents incidents and untoward events involving patients and participates in safety programs including disaster/fire delays
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA standards
  • Performs other duties as needed
  • Employees may be required to work different sites to accommodate scheduling needs

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS

  • Measuring vital signs
  • Blood draw and/or performing in house labs
  • Rapid STI testing
  • Documenting in electronic medical record
  • Medical equipment maintenance

DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Medical Assistant is required to become certified by LA’s Dept of Health in HIV Counseling & Testing
  • Data entry of applicable grant services into the State of LA’s CAREWare reporting application
  • Regular community outreach and Rapid STI Testing
  • Some travel and weekend work as necessary

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of accredited Medical Assistant Course
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or completion of certification within 90 days of employment
  • Understanding of accepted nursing and medical practice standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer skills, and soft office skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in HIV/STI programs
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) desirable
  • Knowledge of Ryan White grant program
  • Knowledge of CAREWare reporting platform

  • Moderate physical effort required, including extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, twisting, or bending
  • Routine grasping, reaching, and repetitive hand/wrist movements required

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is normally performed indoors in a clinic, office, or mobile health unit with varying temperatures
  • Occasional work at outdoor events with varying temperatures as necessary
  • Potential for occasional exposure to low dose radiation hazards, hazardous chemicals, and body fluids and waste
  • Potential for exposure to infectious and contagious diseases
  • Personal protective equipment provided when applicable
