About This Position
Forge ahead with WSB. This position serves as a Senior Community Outreach and Communications Specialist, supporting transportation agencies and clients in the Fort Lauderdale area. The role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive outreach and communications activities for transportation and infrastructure projects—ensuring meaningful, equitable, and accessible engagement with diverse clients, stakeholders, and communities. Related experience with the Florida Department of Transportation and fluency in English and Spanish is required. The Specialist will lead outreach and communications initiatives for transportation and construction projects, applying strategic thinking, creativity, and strong project management skills to deliver impactful engagement solutions across Florida and beyond. This position plays a key role in advancing WSB’s mission by designing innovative engagement strategies, strengthening stakeholder relationships, and supporting business growth through collaborative, community-centered communication. What You Will Do:
Public Engagement & Outreach
• Lead planning, coordination, and management of public engagement activities across multiple projects of varying size and complexity.
• Develop and implement creative, inclusive engagement strategies to reach diverse communities and stakeholders.
• Lead, manage, and facilitate stakeholder meetings, workshops, open houses, and focus groups using innovative techniques to maximize participation.
• Conduct a variety of outreach activities by telephone, virtual meetings, and on-site visits, and manage project communication channels including websites, social media, email, and others as needed.
• Represent client organizations at events, often during evenings and weekends.
Communications & Content Management
• Create and oversee development of project communication materials, including digital content, social media campaigns, newsletters, media advisories, talking points, and other informational material.
• Maintain and update mailing and contact lists, media clips, and multimedia files.
• Synthesize technical transportation or construction-related language into clear, plain language for accessible communications materials.
• Ensure all communication is accurate, timely, and consistent with agency messaging.
• Produce communications using Microsoft Office and familiarity with graphics tools (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
• Familiarity with producing digitally accessible documents and materials.
Project Management & Business Development
• Manage project timelines, deliverables, quality, and client communications, ensuring all work meets scope and expectations.
• Monitor and evaluate engagement efforts, analyze effectiveness, and provide regular updates to project and public engagement leads.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams, including cross-geography coordination as needed, to ensure project alignment and successful delivery.
• Responsible for regional and local business development, including proposals, presentations, and client meetings to grow business.
Event Coordination & Field Engagement
• Lead set-up, execution, and breakdown of outreach events, presentations, and pop-up engagements in indoor and outdoor environments.
• Transport event materials and equipment for public/other meetings and events.
• Attend events, presentations, and community meetings, including evenings and weekends as required.
• Engage directly with community members to collect feedback, answer questions, and support project understanding.
• Conduct surveys, distribute outreach materials, and engage directly with community members.
What You Will Bring:
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public affairs, urban planning, political science, marketing, or related field. Relevant work experience can substitute for educational requirements.
• Preferred 10+ years of experience in public information, public engagement, or communications, preferably related to transportation, design, or construction projects.
• Demonstrated experience working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) on community outreach and communications for transportation, construction, or infrastructure projects.
• Fluency in English and Spanish, including the ability to read, write, and speak fluently.
• Proven success managing complex outreach or communications projects.
• Experience developing strategic communications and delivering public presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, multi-task, and exercise sound judgment in fast-paced environments.
• Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels, including senior management.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Engagement certifications such as IAP2 are a plus.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat.
• Familiarity with collaborative platforms such as Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, ArcGIS, Smartsheet, and Zoom.
