Description:
The IT Technician at McEwen Mining Inc.’s Gold Bar operation is responsible for providing hands-on technical support and maintenance of information technology systems across the mine site. This role helps ensure reliable operation of IT infrastructure, communications systems, and end-user devices while maintaining compliance with company policies, cybersecurity standards, and mine safety regulations.
The position supports daily IT operations in a fast-paced mining environment and requires strong troubleshooting abilities, adaptability, and the ability to work independently in operational conditions. The IT Technician works under the direction of IT Management to maintain site systems, assist users, and support ongoing technology initiatives that enable safe and efficient mining operations.
Key Responsibilities
Provide on-site and remote technical support for desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, and related peripherals. Install, configure, and maintain Windows-based operating systems and standard business applications while assisting mine-site users with day-to-day technical issues to minimize operational downtime.
Network & Communications
Assist with maintaining local and wide area network systems including LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and radio or wireless communication systems. Support network infrastructure such as switches, routers, access points, and cabling systems used throughout the mine property.
Systems & Infrastructure
Perform routine support tasks for servers, backup systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and basic virtualization environments under the direction of IT Management. Assist with site technology systems such as CCTV monitoring, access control systems, and other operational technologies. Support deployment and maintenance of mine-site IT and operational technology (OT) systems as required.
Cybersecurity & Compliance
Follow established IT security policies, access control procedures, and cybersecurity best practices. Assist with user account management, endpoint protection, system patching, and asset tracking. Support compliance processes by gathering documentation, completing routine access reviews, and assisting with audit preparation, including SOX controls and internal IT standards.
Documentation & Coordination
Maintain accurate documentation of systems, procedures, hardware inventories, and incident resolution records. Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal departments to support mine-site operations. Assist with IT projects, infrastructure upgrades, and site expansion initiatives by performing assigned technical tasks.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
Comply with all mine safety regulations, including MSHA requirements and company HSE policies. Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and required training. Ensure IT work is performed safely in offices, workshops, and operational field environments across the mine property.
Qualifications:
● Technical diploma or associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
● 2–5 years of IT support experience, preferably in mining, industrial, construction, or remote-site environments.
● Working knowledge of Windows operating systems and Microsoft 365.
● Experience supporting computer hardware, peripherals, and end-user devices.
● Understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS.
● Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced operational environment.
Preferred:
● Experience supporting IT systems in a mining or industrial operation.
● Familiarity with CCTV systems and access control technologies.
● Experience with radio, wireless, or microwave communications.
● Basic knowledge of server administration, backup systems, or virtualization environments.
Work Environment:
This role operates in a remote, rural mine-site environment and requires travel throughout the property to support systems in offices, plant facilities, and field locations. The position requires the ability to walk and stand on uneven ground, steep slopes, and active mining areas for extended periods.
The role may involve lifting equipment up to 50 pounds and performing tasks requiring bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Employees must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and dust. Required PPE includes hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and high-visibility clothing, with respirators required for certain tasks.
Schedules may include rotating shifts, extended hours, and occasional weekend work depending on operational needs. The position emphasizes safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
