Emergency Management Coordinator & Safety Officer
Position Summary
The Emergency Management Coordinator & Safety Officer is responsible for continuously improving the Emergency management and Life Safety programs for Kootenai Health. This position develops, implements, coordinates, and maintains emergency preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation, and safety activities to ensure regulatory compliance, organizational resilience, and the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
Responsibilities
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and maintains Kootenai Health’s Emergency Management program in alignment with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and organizational policy
• Leads internal preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities for emergencies, disasters, and planned events
• Conducts and maintains an organizational Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA) in collaboration with hospital leadership
• Integrates HVA findings into emergency plans, training priorities, and exercise design
• Serves as the facility Safety Officer in coordination with hospital leadership and Facilities Management
• Maintains, coordinates, and schedules fire drills, evacuation drills, and other required life-safety exercises in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards
• Coordinates fire safety education, including staff training on fire response procedures and evacuation protocols
• Supports compliance with fire and life safety standards through documentation, inspections support, and corrective action tracking
• Coordinates safety rounds, safety committee scheduling, and related documentation
• Serves as a liaison to the Emergency Management Coordinator, offering support and guidance as needed
• Establishes priorities, and reviews deliverables to ensure alignment with organizational goals
• Supports professional development and emergency management and safety functions
• Coordinates internally with clinical, operational, safety, facilities, and leadership teams to support preparedness and life-safety efforts
• Represents Emergency Management and Safety in internal meetings, committees, and planning activities
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Healthcare Administration, Public Safety, Safety Management, or a related field; Associate’s degree and a minimum 2 years related experience may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an Emergency Management Coordinator, Hospital Safety Officer or related experience required in addition to the education requirement
• Demonstrated ability to function effectively in critical, stressful, or rapidly changing situations
• Knowledge of emergency management concepts, incident command principles, and healthcare safety standards
• Primarily office-based with periodic participation in drills, exercises, safety rounds, meetings, and emergency response activities
• Availability to respond to emergencies or incidents, which may occur outside of normal business hours
• Experience in a hospital-based emergency management or healthcare safety preferred
• Previous leadership experience preferred
• Familiarity with HPP grant requirements, fire/life safety practices, and after-action documentation preferred
