Job Description

Principal Data Platform Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Data Platform Engineer based in United States.

This is a senior technical leadership role focused on designing and operating a modern, cloud-native data platform that powers analytics, applications, and downstream data products at scale.
You will define how data flows across the organization—from real-time ingestion and streaming systems through governed storage layers and into curated, consumable data marts.
The role is highly hands-on and deeply architectural, requiring strong judgment in selecting and shaping tools, patterns, and platform standards in a multi-cloud environment.
You will be responsible for ensuring data correctness, reliability, security, and discoverability across the entire data lifecycle.
This position sits at the intersection of data engineering, platform engineering, SRE, and security, with direct exposure to senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
It is an opportunity to build foundational data infrastructure that directly impacts business operations, analytics, and customer-facing capabilities.

Accountabilities:
  • Design and implement end-to-end data platform architecture, including CDC pipelines, streaming systems, schema design, transformation layers, warehouse/mart modeling, and consumption-ready datasets with infrastructure-as-code and automation-first principles.
  • Build and maintain resilient, multi-region data systems with strong guarantees around replication, automated failover, disaster recovery, and operational reliability.
  • Architect scalable streaming and ingestion pipelines with a focus on correctness, schema evolution, replayability, and event-driven design principles.
  • Define and enforce data modeling standards for curated marts and semantic layers to enable reliable self-service analytics and downstream consumption.
  • Implement comprehensive observability across the data platform, including monitoring, alerting, logging, and data quality validation frameworks.
  • Own data governance foundations including PII classification, lineage tracking, access controls, encryption standards, and secure data handling in partnership with Security teams.
  • Establish architectural standards and mentor engineers, driving best practices across data engineering, platform reliability, and system design.
  • Treat cost efficiency as a core design constraint, optimizing compute and storage usage across all platform components.
Requirements:
  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, SRE, or DevOps roles, with demonstrated impact at Staff or Principal IC level.
  • Strong experience building large-scale distributed data systems in production environments with high reliability and performance requirements.
  • Deep cloud expertise (Azure preferred, with transferable AWS or GCP experience), including infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices (e.g., Terraform or equivalent).
  • Strong SQL expertise and solid data modeling skills across both streaming and warehouse/mart architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with orchestration tools and streaming/ingestion frameworks such as Airflow, Kafka, Flink, or similar technologies.
  • Experience designing cross-region replication and disaster recovery strategies with attention to consistency, latency, and availability trade-offs.
  • Experience with modern data warehousing and transformation layers (e.g., Snowflake and dbt or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in Python, Go, or similar languages for automation, tooling, and platform engineering tasks.
  • Strong communication and ownership skills with a track record of delivering complex, cross-functional systems end-to-end.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation with bonus and equity eligibility.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Generous paid time off and paid family bonding leave.
  • Flexible remote-first work environment.
  • Health savings accounts and additional insurance options including disability and supplemental coverage.
  • Strong focus on learning, mentorship, and professional development in high-impact technical environments.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale, modern data infrastructure in a high-growth organization.
