Job Description

Responsible for the daily care of various laboratory animals, including non-human primates, mice, rats, rabbits and/or other species of laboratory animals as necessary. Duties include the husbandry, feeding, and watering of non-human primates, and all associated cage wash activities. May be required to work in ABSLII and/or quarantine animal areas. Other responsibilities include:

  1. Observing animals for abnormalities and sickness, and reporting such findings to the appropriate Supervisory or Veterinary personnel;
  2. Observing and reporting environmental deviations which would affect animal health and research projects (e.g. high temperature or humidity);
  3. Maintaining accurate records related to animal health, census, husbandry, equipment validation, etc.;
  4. Complying with federal, state, & local regulations concerning the humane care of research animals, as well as departmental safety policies, SOPs, and guidelines;
  5. Assisting veterinary and/or research staff with procedures or veterinary treatments as needed;
  6. Participating in the University's occupational health and environment safety programs;
  7. Interacting with online NHP water database to follow watering instructions and document task completion;
  8. Training and mentoring new hires in animal husbandry and facility support duties;
  9. All other duties including general housekeeping as assigned by the Supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and push/pull up to 300lbs routinely.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for a full 7.5-hour shift.
  • Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory equipment (e.g. N95 mask or PAPR), if/when necessary.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent, or;
  • A minimum of three years’ work experience in laboratory animal care, the husbandry of non-human primates, or some combination thereof.


Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience with NHP handling or husbandry preferred.
  • Post-secondary education may count toward work experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required; must be able to communicate effectively with and relate to various personnel through the University.
  • Basic computer skills required, including familiarity with navigating web-based applications.


Certificates and Licenses:

  • LAT certification preferred.

Additional Information

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 37.5 hrs. per week | Saturday- Wednesday | 7:300 am - 4:00 pm. Thursday, Friday and holiday work may be required on a rotating schedule. This position is considered essential and will be required to report to work during school closures, inclement weather, and/or other emergencies. This position is eligible for shift differential.
