Descriptive Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Technician at D&S Dental Laboratory, Inc. is responsible for overseeing and performing routine and emergency maintenance across facilities, primarily at the Waunakee location. The roles serves as a first point of contact for internal facility-related issues and provides hands-on support to repair, install, inspect, and maintain equipment, building systems, and structural elements. Occasional travel to satellite locations (Baraboo, Greenfield, Eau Claire, and Rockford) during the workday is expected. This position requires strong technical knowledge, independent problem-solving, and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple maintenance tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment to ensure seamless support for lab operations.

Essential Functions

Conduct routine inspections of company premises and equipment

  • Handle minor repairs including lights, locks, windows, doors, screens, walls, floors, gutters, and drains
  • Implement preventative maintenance measures to ensure that building systems operate efficiently and that the physical condition of buildings do not deteriorate
  • Perform maintenance tasks such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical repairs to properly maintain D&S buildings
  • Maintain inventory of repair equipment and supplies
  • Replace filters in HVAC systems, Fellows units, and KaVo units
  • Schedule and coordinate maintenance for company vehicles, including delivery vehicles as needed
  • Coordinate and schedule maintenance

Work with a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment

  • Hand tools (i.e. hammers, drills, wrenches, etc.)
  • Precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices

Take apart machines, equipment, or devices to remove and replace defective components

Read, comprehend, and utilize technical manuals and drawings as necessary (i.e. repair manuals, parts catalogs, blueprints, etc.)

Respond promptly to emergencies and notify appropriate personnel

  • Adhere to all safety protocols
  • Identify and address potential safety concerns, making necessary adjustments

Coordinate and supervise external contractors when professional repairs are necessary and keep Director of Lab Operations updated on progress

Apply technical knowledge and sound judgment to achieve accurate, high-quality results and support departmental goals.

Ensures proper maintenance and compliance of company vehicles, coordinating inspections, repairs, and routine servicing as needed. Works with vendors or internal maintenance teams to maintain safe and reliable transportation resources.

Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by management to meet evolving business needs.

Requirements:

Education & Experience

Required

  • Proven as a skilled maintenance worker or similar position with 3-5 years of experience
  • Must possess the manual dexterity, strength, and physical stamina required for daily maintenance
  • Driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required

Preferred

  • Certification or degree in facilities management, building maintenance, mechanical systems, HVAC, or a related technical field
  • Familiarity with healthcare facility maintenance is a plus
  • OSHA certification or other relevant safety training is highly desirable
  • Previous experience leading maintenance projects or coordinating vendors/contractors

  • High level organizational skills, time management skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment to consistently meet deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and resolve problems in a timely and positive manner
  • Ability to take ownership of responsibilities and effectively handle interpersonal relationships with others

Preferred

  • Knowledge of principles, procedures and best practices in the industry
  • Basic technology skills, including MS Office Suite

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting: Continuous for up to 4 hours
  • Standing: Continuous for 8+ hours
  • Bending or stooping continuously for 8+ hours
  • Lift/Push/Carry: Must be able to lift, push, and carry up to 50lbs
  • Vision: The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned (i.e., custodial, food services, general laborer, etc.) or to make general observations of facilities or structures

Additional Physical Requirements

  • The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., machinery alarms, medical codes or alarms)
  • Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet, up to 4 hours
  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. Using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.

Work Conditions

  • Travel: Required up to 25%

  • Must be able to wear personnel protective equipment for tasks requiring them
  • Dust and airborne particles of any kind, such as textile dust, wood, silica
  • Constant or intermittent noiss
  • Hazardous conditions where there is potential for bodily injury such as closeness to moving mechanical parts; working on scaffolding and high places and electric shock.

  • Computer, phone, printer, and miscellaneous office equipment

Work Eligibility

  • Must be at least eighteen years of age
  • Must pass work eligibility requirements
