Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Authentication Experience)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Authentication Experience) based in Canada.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build and evolve backend systems that power critical authentication, verification, and fraud-prevention journeys.
You will work on highly available, low-latency services supporting web and mobile experiences used by millions of customers.
The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, giving you ownership of meaningful quarterly goals and complex, open-ended problems.
You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and engineering partners to balance customer needs, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
You will also help strengthen engineering quality through thoughtful architecture, code review standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
With a strong emphasis on ownership and continuous improvement, you will mentor teammates and contribute to the growth of a globally distributed engineering organization.
This is a remote opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving challenging systems problems while making a direct impact on customer experiences.

Accountabilities
  • Own and deliver quarterly technical and product goals for the team, guiding engineers through ambiguity and supporting successful delivery.
  • Design, develop, and launch scalable backend systems that support authentication, verification, and fraud-related customer journeys.
  • Partner with Product Management, Design, Analytics, and other stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle, contributing to ideation and technical decision-making.
  • Evaluate technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs and help teams make informed decisions that balance customer, business, and engineering priorities.
  • Proactively identify and lead the resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues.
  • Support the reliability and availability of team-owned systems by defining and monitoring metrics, escalating issues when necessary, and participating in operational and on-call activities.
  • Establish and improve engineering standards around architecture, design, code reviews, quality, and ownership.
  • Share technical knowledge through writing, presentations, and technical talks, helping raise engineering standards across teams.
  • Mentor and support engineers through feedback, guidance, and hands-on leadership while contributing to a strong culture of ownership and continuous development.
Requirements
  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale, using technologies such as Python or Kotlin.
  • Demonstrated experience building and operating highly available distributed systems with technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of web and mobile architectures, including familiarity with frontend interaction patterns, fraud prevention, and backend-for-frontend approaches.
  • Proven ability to create technical plans for significant features or system components, with a focus on elegant, simple, extensible, and maintainable designs.
  • Strong software engineering skills, including the ability to write high-quality, readable code and make substantial changes safely within large codebases.
  • Experience developing tools, processes, and engineering practices that enable reliable delivery and maintainability.
  • Strong ownership mindset, with a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and proactively seeking feedback from peers, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a global engineering organization.
Benefits
  • Annual base salary range of CAD $153,000–$213,000, with placement based on factors including location, experience, and job-related skills.
  • Potential equity rewards as part of the broader total compensation package.
  • Monthly stipends supporting health, wellness, technology, and other eligible expenses.
  • 100% employer-paid healthcare premiums for employees and dependents.
  • Dental and vision coverage for employees and dependents.
  • Flexible spending allowances for technology, food, lifestyle needs, and family-forming expenses.
  • Competitive vacation and holiday time to support rest and recharge.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), allowing eligible employees to purchase shares at a discount.
  • Remote-first working environment, with this position available to eligible candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
  • Reasonable accommodations available throughout the hiring process for candidates who require individualized support.
  • This posting represents an existing vacancy.
