This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Authentication Experience) based in Canada.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build and evolve backend systems that power critical authentication, verification, and fraud-prevention journeys.
You will work on highly available, low-latency services supporting web and mobile experiences used by millions of customers.
The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, giving you ownership of meaningful quarterly goals and complex, open-ended problems.
You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and engineering partners to balance customer needs, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
You will also help strengthen engineering quality through thoughtful architecture, code review standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
With a strong emphasis on ownership and continuous improvement, you will mentor teammates and contribute to the growth of a globally distributed engineering organization.

- Own and deliver quarterly technical and product goals for the team, guiding engineers through ambiguity and supporting successful delivery.
- Design, develop, and launch scalable backend systems that support authentication, verification, and fraud-related customer journeys.
- Partner with Product Management, Design, Analytics, and other stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle, contributing to ideation and technical decision-making.
- Evaluate technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs and help teams make informed decisions that balance customer, business, and engineering priorities.
- Proactively identify and lead the resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues.
- Support the reliability and availability of team-owned systems by defining and monitoring metrics, escalating issues when necessary, and participating in operational and on-call activities.
- Establish and improve engineering standards around architecture, design, code reviews, quality, and ownership.
- Share technical knowledge through writing, presentations, and technical talks, helping raise engineering standards across teams.
- Mentor and support engineers through feedback, guidance, and hands-on leadership while contributing to a strong culture of ownership and continuous development.
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale, using technologies such as Python or Kotlin.
- Demonstrated experience building and operating highly available distributed systems with technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
- Understanding of web and mobile architectures, including familiarity with frontend interaction patterns, fraud prevention, and backend-for-frontend approaches.
- Proven ability to create technical plans for significant features or system components, with a focus on elegant, simple, extensible, and maintainable designs.
- Strong software engineering skills, including the ability to write high-quality, readable code and make substantial changes safely within large codebases.
- Experience developing tools, processes, and engineering practices that enable reliable delivery and maintainability.
- Strong ownership mindset, with a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and proactively seeking feedback from peers, managers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a global engineering organization.
- Annual base salary range of CAD $153,000–$213,000, with placement based on factors including location, experience, and job-related skills.
