Job Description
Manager, Communications
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Internal Communications
- Determine the pulse of the workforce and their needs and desires for communication.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive internal communications plan aligned with organizational strategy, culture, safety, workforce and change priorities.
- Create and manage an editorial calendar for employee communications across channels such as email, newsletters, town halls, leadership messages, intranet or employee app.
- Develop interesting and compelling content for internal communications vehicles, partnering with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to create meaningful content consistently.
- Partner with Human Resources, Patient Experience, Quality, Operations and executive leaders to translate complex information into clear, timely and actionable communication.
- Seek out innovative approaches to communicate with a diverse, 24/7 workforce, including employees who do not regularly use email or computers.
- Find opportunities to tell the stories of employees and promote recognition of their talents and accomplishments.
- Measure employee communication reach, understanding and engagement and recommend improvements.
Executive and Leadership Communications
- Draft executive messages, talking points, presentations, scripts, FAQs and other leadership communications.
- Provide counsel to leaders on audience, tone, sequencing, timing and channel selection.
- Support town halls, management communications and major organizational announcements.
- Help leaders communicate change with clarity, empathy and consistency.
Social Media and Influencer Relations
- Develop and execute Signature Healthcare's owned social media strategy in partnership with the Director of Marketing & Communications, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, brand standards and marketing campaigns.
- Oversee the organization's social media presence across all platforms, providing strategic direction, editorial oversight and performance measurement.
- Collaborate with the Content Coordinator to develop and maintain an engaging social media content calendar that highlights Signature Healthcare's physicians, employees, patients, services and community impact.
- Build and maintain relationships with community influencers and those associated with key areas of interest for Signature Healthcare (such as maternity) and digital content creators to increase awareness of Signature Healthcare and amplify positive organizational stories.
- Analyze social media performance metrics and prepare regular reports with recommendations for continuous improvement.
Media Relations and Public Relations
- Serve as the primary day-to-day media contact and build constructive relationships with local and regional reporters, editors and community influencers.
- Identify, develop and pitch positive stories that demonstrate Signature Healthcare’s quality, expertise, access, patient impact and community value.
- Coordinate interviews, prepare spokespeople, track coverage and maintain media contact and coverage databases.
- Partner with the Director and external public relations support on proactive campaigns and complex issues.
Crisis and Issues Communications
- In partnership with the Director, maintain crisis communications plans, templates, contact lists and approval pathways.
- Prepare timely and accurate communications during emergencies, operational disruptions, cybersecurity incidents and other sensitive situations in partnership with the director.
- Monitor emerging issues and recommend communication responses or escalation.
- Participate in incident command or emergency preparedness activities as assigned.
Content and Project Leadership
- Provide clear editorial direction to the Content Coordinator for internal and external communications content.
- Edit content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, tone and brand alignment.
- Manage communications requests related to your areas of expertise.
- Work collaboratively with external designers, printers, photographers, videographers and digital partners.
- Ensure communications comply with privacy, legal, regulatory and organizational requirements.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Demonstrated experience in internal communications, media relations, social media and executive writing.
- Exceptional writing, editing and message-development skills across formats and audiences.
- Ability to manage confidential information and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Experience managing multiple projects, deadlines and approval processes.
- Crisis communications or emergency response experience.
- Experience communicating with a large, diverse or decentralized workforce.
- Experience with intranet, email marketing or employee communication platforms and analytics.
- Strong news judgment and ability to identify compelling stories.
- Ability to synthesize complex clinical, operational or organizational information into clear language.
- Confidence advising leaders while remaining collaborative and service-oriented.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with media, employees, clinicians, executives and community stakeholders.
- High attention to detail, accuracy and follow-through.
- Commitment to inclusive and accessible communication.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:
- Education: BA/BS in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism, or related field required.
- Experience: Five years or greater of progressively responsible communications, public relations or journalism experience. Healthcare, hospital, public health or highly regulated industry experience. Experience with 24/7 workforce.
- Certification/Licensure: N/A
- Software/Hardware: All Microsoft products, social media, intranet publishing, AI usage required. Design software preferred.
- Other: Must have the ability to work nights and weekends on occasion. Remote work is negotiable.
Must have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs carrying support materials for external office events.
Must have transportation to drive offsite to other SHC buildings in area towns to local events & meetings.
