Systems Support & Database Specialist Manhattan School of Computer Technology (MSCT) Location: Brooklyn, NY Department: Information Technology / Academic Systems Employment Type: Full-Time Reports To: Academic Systems Administrator / Campus Executive Director Position Summary Manhattan School of Computer Technology (MSCT) is seeking a Systems Support & Database Specialist to provide technical support for the school's academic and administrative technology environment. This position combines Help Desk support with back-end systems work, including Orbund SIS, Canvas LMS, MySQL/SQL, database reporting, troubleshooting, user support, and system integrations. The ideal candidate is comfortable assisting end users while also working behind the scenes with databases, queries, reports, system configurations, and technical troubleshooting. This role will work closely with the Academic Systems Administrator and MSCT departments to ensure that technology issues are resolved quickly and institutional systems operate efficiently. Key Responsibilities Orbund SIS Support Provide day-to-day technical support for Orbund Student Information System (SIS). Troubleshoot user, student record, enrollment, attendance, reporting, and system-access issues. Assist with user accounts, permissions, roles, and access requests. Support custom fields, reports, forms, and system configurations. Assist departments with data extraction and reporting. Investigate discrepancies between system records and departmental reports. Escalate configuration or vendor-level issues to the Academic Systems Administrator or Orbund support. Assist with testing system changes and new functionality. Canvas LMS Support Provide technical support for Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Assist faculty and staff with course access, enrollment, sections, assignments, grading, and user issues. Troubleshoot student and instructor LMS problems. Support course creation and term/section setup. Assist with user roles and permissions. Help maintain standardized course structures and templates. Troubleshoot integrations between Canvas and other institutional systems. Document recurring issues and develop solutions to reduce Help Desk requests. MySQL / SQL & Database Support Write and maintain SQL/MySQL queries for reporting and troubleshooting. Retrieve and analyze data from institutional databases. Create queries to support operational and leadership reports. Assist with data validation and reconciliation. Identify duplicate, missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate data. Support data imports, exports, and database-related processes. Assist with troubleshooting database and application issues. Work with the Academic Systems Administrator on more advanced queries and reporting requirements. Maintain appropriate security when accessing institutional databases and student information. Help Desk & Technical Support Manage and respond to Help Desk tickets from faculty and staff. Diagnose hardware, software, system-access, and application issues. Prioritize tickets based on urgency and operational impact. Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions. Escalate complex issues when necessary. Maintain communication with users until issues are resolved. Identify recurring problems and recommend permanent solutions. Maintain a knowledge base of common issues and resolutions. Reporting & Data Assist in developing reports for Admissions, Education, Financial Aid, Student Affairs, Career Services, Registrar, and Leadership. Support recurring operational reports and dashboards. Verify report accuracy before distribution. Assist with automating repetitive reports and data processes. Support Excel-based reporting and data analysis. Help departments understand and properly use system-generated reports. Systems & Integrations Assist with integrations between Orbund, Canvas, CRM, and other institutional systems. Troubleshoot data-transfer and synchronization issues. Support API, import/export, and integration processes where applicable. Test integrations and system changes before production implementation. Assist with system upgrades and vendor implementations. Maintain technical documentation for integrations and workflows. Required Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Development, or a related field; equivalent technical experience may be considered. Working knowledge of SQL and/or MySQL. Experience troubleshooting software and user-access issues. Understanding of relational databases and database structures. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to investigate technical issues independently. Strong communication and customer-service skills. Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical users. Strong attention to detail and data accuracy. Ability to manage multiple Help Desk requests and technical projects simultaneously. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Orbund SIS or another Student Information System. Experience with Canvas LMS or another Learning Management System. Experience writing SQL/MySQL queries. Experience with CRM systems. Experience with APIs, integrations, or data imports/exports. Experience with Microsoft 365 and advanced Excel. Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, PHP, or another programming/scripting language is a plus. Experience working in higher education, career education, or a school environment is preferred. Role Structure This position is designed to complement, rather than replace, the Academic Systems Administrator. The Systems Support & Database Specialist will focus heavily on technical support, Help Desk operations, SQL/MySQL, reporting, troubleshooting, and back-end support, while more significant system administration, institutional configuration, vendor management, security permissions, and strategic system decisions remain under the Academic Systems Administrator. Success in This Position The successful candidate will help MSCT achieve faster Help Desk resolution, reliable Orbund and Canvas support, accurate database reporting, improved SQL/MySQL reporting capabilities, fewer recurring technical problems, better documentation, and stronger connections between institutional systems.
