JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the registered nurse, performs a variety of clerical duties associated with patient care unit operations. The Ward Secretary/Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will comply with objectives, standards and policies of the department and within the parameters of his or her preparation. Cooperates with the members of the nursing and medical staffs and other hospital departments. When not performing clerical duties, the Ward Secretary/CNA will provide direct nursing care for infant through geriatric patients on the Acute Care unit by instituting the minimum standard of care (MSOC).

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

Clerical:

  1. Maintains an orderly and business-like environment at the nursing station in order to assist members of the health care team in the performance of their jobs despite high stress factors.
  2. Stickers, assembles, completes and processes patient’s charts as indicated. Maintains an accurate clinical record, and recording information accurately per hospital policy.
  3. Initiates discharge instructions in the electronic health record and coordinates transfer of patients when appropriate.
  4. Communicates with members of the health team, patients and visitors using verbal and written means utilizing equipment such as telephone, paging system and computer. Performs message duties as necessary and will also complete requests for non-medical services for patients.
  5. Prepares special forms needed for procedures or patient cares.
  6. Orders unit supplies to maintain inventory of the unit’s equipment, stock and supplies. Prepares requisitions and reports for maintenance repairs.
  7. Schedules appointments for patients when appropriate.
  8. Prepares paper documentation when experiencing electronic health record downtime.
  9. Attends staff meetings at least 80% of the time.
  10. Maintains a good working relationship among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication. Willing to identify problems and participate in problem solving process. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively.
  11. Accepts reassignment as needed to provide necessary coverage for all patient care units.
  12. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.

Clinical:

  1. Provides for patient’s personal hygiene.
  1. Gives bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, shaves, oral care and assists with showers.
  1. Provides for activities of daily living.
  1. Assists with meals and feeds patients.
  2. Ambulates, turns and positions patients.
  3. Provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
  1. Assist with wound care, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments and sitz and therapeutic baths.
  2. Performs I&O.
  1. Collects vital signs and weight.
  2. Performs specimen collection and post-mortem care.
  1. Provides for comfort needs of patients.
  2. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.
  3. Utilizes resources and materials in an efficient and safe manner.
  4. Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.
  5. Promptly answers patients’ call lights and requests.
  6. Reports observations of a patient and any abnormal findings to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.
  1. Coordinates ongoing assessment of the patient with staff RN according to developed age related standards of care.
  2. Documents on appropriate flow sheets within specified time frame.
  3. Documentation is accurate and complete according to standards.
  4. Assists in evaluation of effectiveness plan of care and patient’s physical and emotional response to teaching and nursing interventions.
  1. Instills confidence in the patient by maintaining a neat and attractive appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.
  1. Interacts effectively with patients both through oral and written communication using appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior to reinforce the content of the message.
  2. Respects patient need for privacy, explains cares to patient, and treats patient as an individual with dignity.
  1. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program and listed as current and active on the WI Nurse Aide Registry.
  3. Previous hospital experience preferred.
  4. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential nursing practice.
  4. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
  5. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress and with minimal supervision.
  6. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  7. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  8. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. The CNA is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The CNA is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and smell.
  3. The CNA must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
  6. Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
