Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) will work with individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism, and provide therapeutic intervention in the educational setting. The RBT will also assess individual needs, document progress via data collection, implement behavior plans, and provide ongoing support and documentation.

REGISTERED BEHAVIOR TECHNICAL (RBT) REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold and maintain a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Certification*
    • Willing to obtain an RBT Certification within the first thirty (30) school days of the start of position.
  • Proven ability or willingness to be trained to work effectively with individuals demonstrating severe developmental disabilities and high-intensity behaviors.
  • Strong organizational, verbal/written communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of behavior assessment and intervention, or willingness to be trained on such methodologies.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check per Michigan Department of Education (MDE) requirements.
  • Ability to travel daily to local school districts with Marquette and Alger counties (must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst, the Registered Behavior Technician will:

  • Work with the students on a 1:1 basis throughout the two-county area, as determined by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
  • Assist with classroom management and respond to undesirable behaviors by replacing them with desired behaviors.
  • Respond to unexpected behaviors independently and appropriately by implementing trained techniques.
  • Provided Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services as recommended.
  • Work with severely disabled children.
  • Maximize student access to curriculum and create student independence.
  • Implement academic programming as instructed by the BCBA and Special Education Teacher.
  • Collect data and maintain accurate records to document progress.
  • Build and maintain the positive school and classroom culture held within this school district.
  • Mentor and model the use of ABA techniques for individuals.
  • Communicate with teachers and other team members.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, in-person attendance.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and communicate this to the supervising BCBA for direction in adjusting programming.
  • Carry out other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Supervisor.​​​​​​​
SPECIAL CONDITIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Must uphold confidentiality and student information and other privileged and/or sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift students who have physical disabilities as necessary.
  • Proficiency with software/applications including Microsoft Word and Google Suite.
  • May include summer hours.
  • Will require daily travel to local school districts within Marquette and Alger counties.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently required to position oneself low to the ground (stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl) to interact with students; must be able to move quickly or run short distances to maintain student safety.
  • Regularly required to lift, move, or support students with physical disabilities or during behavioral crises. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to monitor student behavior and record data, and the auditory ability to hear and respond to student vocalizations and environmental safety cues.
  • Ability to sustain high levels of physical energy and alertness throughout the school day.
  • Primarily an educational/classroom setting, but includes playground, cafeteria, and school transportation environments.
  • Potential exposure to high-intensity, aggressive, or unpredictable student behaviors (e.g. biting, scratching, hitting, throwing objects).
  • Daily exposure to variable weather conditions while driving between regional school sites.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time position; Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job.

COMPENSATION: According to Marquette-Alger RESA AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement
