Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The HIV Prevention Medical Assistant provides patient care for patients currently on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and interested in starting PrEP. This role also may be involved in coordination of long-acting injectable (LAI) PrEP and HIV medications used for treatment as prevention. This role assists with daily care and performs various medical tasks including but not limited to vital signs, point-of-care testing, outreach, medication administration, phlebotomy, and documentation. The medical assistant also performs administrative duties including medical case management and prescription coordination as assigned.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care

• Daily contact with patients, providers, nursing staff, pharmacies, and other internal and external contacts as it relates to patient care

• Participate in visits including rooming patients, taking vital signs, administering medications, perform point-of care-testing, and collecting/processing specimens

• Execute MA standing orders as directed

• Provide testing and treatment education and counseling within MA scope of practice

• Mange pre/post visit tasks such as labs, referrals, medical records, medication assistance

Communication

• Work collaboratively with all members of patient care team.

• Utilize telephonic and text platforms to communicate with patients

• Communicate patient updates and follow-ups

Checking, Examining, and Recording

• Document all visits and communication as appropriate

• Track LAIs and coordinate with patients, pharmacies, and care teams

Workplace Computers and Equipment

• Documents in medical records and writes notes in an accurate and thorough manner.

• Performs point of care and other tests according to established policies and procedures.

Other Duties as Assigned

• Including but not limited to participating in clinic outreach events, participating in quality improvement initiatives, supporting special projects, training/onboarding new staff members, and other clinical or administrative functions as directed by supervisor.

• Ability to work effectively with a diverse population

• Ability to deliver exceptional customer service by empathizing with customer/patient needs

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work as part of a team

• Must be flexible and adapt to a changing environment

• Must possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program or 5 years of experience working as a medical assistant in a clinical capacity

• Required: Obtain Certified Registered Medical Assistant Certification within 90 days of employment

• Required: CPR Certification before the start date

• Required: Phlebotomy experience

• Preferred: At least 1 year of experience as a medical assistant in a similar environment

• Desired: Working knowledge of electronic medical records
