Job Description

We are looking for Immigration and refugee law services staff lawyer (full time, permanent, one (1) position) with at least three (3) years of of I&R law experience to join our team at the Regina Office. Under the leadership of the Director, Immigration and Refugee (I&R) Law Services, the Immigration and Refugee Law Staff Lawyer, working with I&R Regulated Consultants and Administrative Support Staff, provides legal services to eligible clients. The position involves working with a vulnerable population where language and culture differ; building trust and demonstrating compassion are essential.

Our lawyer competitive salary is in the range of $98,927.18 up to $203,233.84 based on years of relevant experience and Call to Bar years. Responsibilities

Under the leadership of the Director,I&R Law Services key staff lawyer responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Subject to The Legal Aid Act and The Legal Aid Regulations, provides immigration and refugee legal services (advice, representation) to eligible clients, where the matter is considered to have legal merit.
  • Legal Services include (as defined in The Legal Aid Regulations):
    • Interviewing applicants/clients to determine service eligibility (merit), to assess the legal problem, to gather information, to determine with the client the range of options available
    • Representing a client at the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and the Federal Court.
  • Preparing immigration and refugee law documents, including IRB, IRCC portal applications (Refugee Protection Division (RPD) Claim, Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (PRRA), and interviewing clients to assist in said preparation.
  • Representing clients at RPD Hearings, PRRAs, Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications (H&Cs), deferrals and other applications to CBSA and/or the IRCC, the Refugee Appeal Division, the Federal Court
  • Providing summary legal advice.
  • Participating in legal education and test case initiatives.
  • Participating in data collecting, docketing, and producing reports, as required.
  • Providing support to the Director, I&R Law Services, in overseeing the legal work of immigration consultants.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of I&R law experience representing immigrants and refugees at tribunals and courts is a requirement.
  • Law degree from a recognized law school.
  • Meeting LAS I&R Quality and Service Standards is a requirement.
  • Experience working with marginalized populations within the justice system is a requirement.
  • Experience and proficiency with computer software applications, including legal research applications and MS Office 365 is a requirement.
  • Experience using CLIO practice management software is an asset.
  • Lived experience as an immigrant and/or within immigrant and refugee communities is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in languages other than English is an asset.
