Job Description
CNC Machinist Lead
Summary:
Provides hands-on leadership and performs advanced machining and fitting of complex parts, tools, and equipment in support of production. Manufactures aircraft components, fixtures, and sheet metal assemblies while ensuring adherence to tight tolerances and quality standards. Interprets blueprints, sketches, and specifications to plan and execute machining operations. Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools and determines optimal operation sequences. Serves as a technical expert and mentor to machinists, supporting training, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
• Lead and coordinate daily activities of CNC machinists to ensure production goals, quality standards, and timelines are met
• Perform complex machining operations independently with minimal supervision
• Set up and operate CNC and manual machines, including mills, lathes, and drill presses
• Determine machining processes, tooling, and operation sequences for efficiency and accuracy
• Fabricate new and replacement parts for mechanical equipment and aircraft components
• Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to less experienced machinists
• Support production and pilot runs, including setups and tool adjustments
• Interpret blueprints, process sheets, and sketches to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications
• Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, and other instruments to verify tolerances
• Inspect completed parts for quality and conformance to specifications
• Troubleshoot machining issues and assist in resolving production challenges
• Maintain equipment and perform minor machine repairs as needed
• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to improve processes and resolve issues
• Promote and enforce safety standards, including proper use of PPE
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains
• Perform additional duties as assigned
Skills and qualifications:
• 5+ years of CNC machining experience; lead or supervisory experience preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical machining degree preferred
• Advanced proficiency with vertical mills, lathes, drill presses, and precision measuring tools
• Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and material properties
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
• Experience working with tight tolerances and complex machining requirements
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to prioritize work, make decisions, and support team productivity
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Effective communication and leadership abilities
• Forklift certification preferred
• Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team leader
• Knowledge and consistent use of required PPE
Work Environment:
Work is performed under in a manufacturing environment. Exposure to dust, fumes, noise, vibration, heat and cold may occur. Position requires constant standing throughout the shift.
